Potted deep enough?
Couldn't resist the amaryllis bulbs on sale at the gardening store and got a "Flamenco Queen" bulb. I read that amaryllis should be potted with 2/3 of the bulb buried but how necessary is that? As you can see, it's more half buried. TIA #greggang!

@ballondusoleil the bulb will dry out if itβs not covered enough.. i try to cover all mine up to the bottom of the βneckβ I have a few older bulbs with thicker outter layer that I can get away with lower for the season but after the blooms finish (Feb-ish) I cover with soil to the neck till itβs time to put them back to sleep (May-ish)
@ballondusoleil I mean, that looks pretty good to me, although Iβm no amaryllis expert! And it looks like thereβs green healthy growth ππΌ
@Lynsplants @ballondusoleil I would definitely listen to Lyns!! β¬οΈ βπΌ
@Lynsplants Now I have a question Lyns! π Are you familiar with narcissi bulbs too? I just have mine on pebbles with water coming up to exactly where the roots are but not touching the bulb. Is this a bad idea?
@DreamMachine thanks, Nadia! The growth it already has is promising. And the larger stalk has some colour so I think it's the flower πΈπ
@Lynsplants thanks for the tip, Lyns - I read more about potting and also didn't consider how top-heavy it'll be. I might need to go up a pot size - this pot is only 1/4" wider than the bulb and its existing roots were almost at the bottom already when I first potted it. I had read they like to be snug but this is maybe too snug!
@Lynsplants uh oh π€¦π»ββοΈ I may have to look all this up as I have two!!
@DreamMachine Iβm in 9b so I have a bunch planted outside! Havenβt done any insideβ¦ which ones do you have? Youβre raising those like I do my orchids!
@ballondusoleil good rule of thumb for the pot two fingers between the bulb and the pot rim is perfect size for #Amaryllis
@ZappyLilac84 Victoria, I read that potting them isn't necessary unless you want to try growing them again the following year. Do you have yours in water?
@DreamMachine I've read about the pebble method as well for these types of plants and it sounds like you're doing it right - bulb should be above the water. Good luck and please share pics when yours bloom!
@ballondusoleil no! π©π©π© it just said put it out and watch it bloom! π€·π»ββοΈπ€¦π»ββοΈπ
@ZappyLilac84 I'd just go with the instructions - there seems to be a lot of different ways to grow amaryllis π±π€please share photos when yours bloom!
@ZappyLilac84 they're lovely! Are the bulbs covered in wax? I've seen those and was curious about them.
@ballondusoleil yes they are!
@Lynsplants hmm, I was in 8b but my zone is moving closer to 9a π€ Theyβre paperwhites, Narcissus papyraceus! My grandmother used to always send me paperwhites from the farm in Connecticut where my parents worked, so December wouldnβt be the same without them! I also grow my orchids (well, phals) like that, except no pebbles! And @ballondusoleil here they are flowering! π₯°
@DreamMachine oh nice! Yup I have some that have naturalized out front for 20+ years and I just added new ones when I planted all the 1000 other bulbs last month
@DreamMachine very pretty! I love spring flowers - this amaryllis might be my gateway plant to forcing bulbs in the winter so I can see them sooner π
