Rain, Rain, Go Away…My Calamondin Needs a Break Today!

I just repotted my very first Calamondin orange tree 4 days ago (I’m in zone 7a), and since then it’s been a total rain-fest. The day after I repotted was dry, but besides that it’s been raining almost nonstop, and still two more days of rain with temps around 10–16°C (50–60°F) before we see some sun.

She’s in a clay pot with good drainage and an airy mix:
• 2 parts PRO-MIX Potting Mix
• 1 part PRO-MIX Orchid Bark
• 1 part Miracle-Gro Perlite
• ½ part Golfgreen Compost + Worm Castings

I’m only concerned because the soil really hasn’t had a chance to dry out since that initial post-repot watering. She’s in a clay pot with a drainage hole but with no sun and the air being so damp and cool, it’s hard to get her to dry out.

I think she’ll be okay, but I’d love to hear from anyone who grows Calamondin—how do you manage soggy weather or keep roots happy in conditions like this? Any recovery tips for after all this rain passes?

I always wonder how plants survive in the wild with such an inconsistent watering schedule 🤣
Hi Sandra, welcome to Greg!

I feel this. We have had three days of rain and have 3+ more in the forecast. It's been too cold for me to move indoor plants out so luckily I am just getting out of needing to water the seedlings in the veggie garden.

This has definitely happened to me a few times. I agree, you're likely totally fine. Between the lay pot, drainage and airy mix your plant shouldn't have any issues. When weather like this happens I just remind myself: if the plant wasn't in my care it would be in the ground and the water probably doesn't drain as fast there.
@AKMplants @SavvyScarletoak you'll be surprised in Singapore. Here, we can get seasons of daily rain, or no rain for two weeks, calamansi [not calamondin 😡. Ok, i guess it's an acceptable name, but originally it's calamansi] grows absolutely fine.

But our temps are like 32°C daily high.
