help?? resuscitating a window leaf plant??
received a cutting of this window leaf back in august from a friend. she was doing great in water, i moved her to a terracotta pot with a mix of succulent/regular soil, and it was all down hill from there. dropped all of her leaves, roots wound up rotting, and this is what weβre left with. how can i (hopefully) bring her back? #PropagationStation #PlantTherapy #WindowLeaf #Monstera #BeforeAndAfter

Good work on putting this plant back in water. You will have to start again but thatβs ok! Please make sure you change that water every week to ensure the plantβs roots have adequate oxygen molecules in the water. Monstera adansonii is an aroid. These plants live in warm, humid climates. It needs a soil that is chunky and aerated but also that will stay moist. For this reason I usually use plastic pots (you can then place the plastic pot into a terracotta or another outer pot for aesthetic reasons). I wish I had thought to use clear plastic pots when I first starting out - itβs great for showing you some of the roots, easy to keep an eye on the success of your propagation. Use an aroid mix - soil + succulent soil in a terracotta pot is way to dry. Too much soil can create the opposite problem, creating boggy areas that suffocate the roots. Use an aroid mix instead - you can buy already mix or mix your own. There are different recipes out there, hereβs an example: 40% orchid bark, 30% potting mix, 20% coco coir, and 10% perlite. Each component contributes a different function but youβll notice that soil is not a big component. You can also google soilless aroid mixes, this is fine. But please donβt use peat moss ever, it is unsustainable. There are perfectly good alternatives such as coco coir (aka coco peat). Sphagnum moss should be sourced very carefully also! You have plenty of time to do your research on mixes while waiting for your roots to grow. I usually wait until the roots are 2 inches or until they have developed secondary roots. Best of luck with this baby! πΏπΏπΏ
@WelsomeRhodotus thank you SO much for all of this wonderful information! i will absolutely be trying the plastic pots with an aroid mix once i see some decent roots on this lil guy. what size pot do you recommend to start off after the water?
@futureghost no worries at all! I usually go about 1 inch bigger than the diameter of the root ball. I add more if I am using a plank or support that has its own girth. May I suggest a coir pole for this baby? Itβs a climber and will go crazy with its vines. Hereβs one of mine at the moment. It catches on clothing every time I walk past like βhey hey heeeey! Whatcha up to mum?β πΏπΏπΏ
@WelsomeRhodotus what a gorgeous plant, omg! β¨π± i will be manifesting a plant half as beautiful as this, and investing in a pole for mine to live her best viny life!
@futureghost best of luck with your baby!! β€οΈβ€οΈ
