What % Isopropyl Alcohol do you use?

I haven’t used Alcohol to wipe pests off leaves yet, but I am curious, What % Alcohol do you use when wiping down leaves of pests and does it matter? Would 91% be too strong and damage the leaves or does the higher percent not matter and it will kill off the pest faster? 🤔
Is 50% or 70% better or worse? 😀 Sorry it’s kind of a noob question, I just don’t want to accidentally burn leaves when the day comes. 🥲

I would keep the plant out of the sun until it is totally dry to be on the safe side. ❤️
@JCPlantProper okay 😀 thank you! That’s helpful. I didn’t know it was to be diluted. 😊
@TruthfulApricot gotchu! 😅 that seems to be the trend of putting anything on a plant 🥲 “keep out of sun”
I always go with 70% (here its a few dollars cheaper than the 90%) because it’s easier on the plants AND you don’t have to worry about diluting it as much and then worrying about burning your plant :)
@kscape okay! So if it’s 70% it doesn’t have to be diluted ? Yay! 😊
@PlantingPeace I do dilute it, but didn’t dilute it as much as I had to dilute the 90%.

If you want me to be honest, I eyeball 🤣🤣 if I have a spray bottle, I’ll do like…2-3 squirts of alcohol and the rest fill with water and I’ve gotten rid of anything I had to get rid of AND never affected or burnt my plants 🤩🌿✨

The thing I’ve had problems with is Neem Oil, but I switched to Natria insecticidal soap and it’s been so much better
Okay, so still dilute it @kscape 🤣 I love the whole “chefs intuition” with the dilution from you and @JCPlantProper 🤣
Basically just get it in there but not the main part of it 😊 got it! 😌
No more than 70%.
@PlantingPeace bahahaha yes. I just go with 70% and suggest it because it’s safer for newer (and current) plants parents and like I mentioned, I’ve noticed some Walmarts or other stores that usually charge a dollar or two more for the 90%. Im all for #PlantingOnABudget so if the 70% works great and don’t have to dilute it as much, it’s good for me 😁💧🌱
@PlantingPeace You can grab 70% at the Dollar Tree. If you do, grab a little spray bottle, magnifying glass, and some makeup cotton pads. I spray down the leaves, dab a bit of alcohol on a pad and start wiping. The magnifying glass is to catch any crawlers in action!
@AwesomePlants I’m loving the whole kit 🤣🤣 thank you for the tips 🥰
@AwesomePlants @kscape I hear you guys on the insecticidal soap. My thing is, what if there is a cutting prop near a plant with spider mites and you might want to treat precautionary. Is insecticidal soap too harsh for a cutting? Because I read you shouldnt use it on a cutting but have you guys ever tested that?
@PlantingPeace That’s true. The old “better safe than sorry” fallback. ❤️😁❤️
I use regular one from any grocery store. I don’t even mix it with water. I just pour it into spray bottle and use it on my succulents when I need it.
@vvvelo 🤣 survival of the fittest in your house. But good to know succulents can handle that! 😀
I’ve used 70% undiluted without issues so far but on things like citrus trees and hibiscus.
@PlantingPeace I have used Natria on even cuttings and they've been fine. Every so often, EVERYTHING gets doused in Natria for me.

Do you currently have pests or just asking for future reference?

Best proactive measures for all new plants, wash off leaves, inspect, and spray with Natria. Quarantine all new plants for about a month in case there are some crawlerrs to help minimize spreading to all your other plants.

If you're limited on space to quarantine, I suggest a rolling cart for quarantine so you can roll it wherever you need to.
@AwesomePlants for future and I guess amazing tips for preventative too. I’m pretty new to indoor plants, I’m use to having outdoor plants and pretty much letting nature take the wheel 🤣 the worst infestations I’ve had were aphids that I just blasted off with the watering hose. 😅 Indoor plants come with their bugs at times and I just want to be super ready for those because I’m high-key not a insect person 🫢

I suppose I’ll start doing this spray down though 😅 I was considering if doing insecticidal soap once a month or so every other month just in case would be overkill but I guess it isn’t. 🥰. Thank you for all the helpful tips @AwesomePlants , you’re awesome! 😄 I’m surely gonna start spraying my new plants before quarantine ☺️
@BeesZenGarden 😀 so it seems 70% is safe to not dilute on certain plants. I’m guessing softer thin foliage things would need more dilution than otherwise. Thank you bee 🥰
@PlantingPeace it's good practice to 🔬inspect plants every so often. I do it about once a month when I'm wiping down leaves from dust. I take out my little magnifying glass 🧐 and make sure nothing is moving on each plant and shine my babies up. If something is moving, I set it aside for further attention. 🤓

I'm with you about bugs. I don't do anything creepy crawly. I keep all my plants inside all the time.
Yup I use 70% undiluted in a spray bottle for mites and mealy bugs but mostly I prefer lady bugs they do most of the work for me
I agree with everything @AwesomePlants 💖💖💖 I have the same exact routine !!!
I’ve used hand sanitizer. It’s easier to handle a pump gel than a bottle of liquid. I don’t use it on delicate leaves though. I have bottles of unused hand sanitizer cuz they give them away.
I use which ever alcohol strength I have on hand. I pour some in a small dish. Appy with Qtip or cotton ball.
@AwesomePlants Great idea!
@AwesomePlants I don’t just spray plants before quarantining them.. I give them a whole entire Florida-strength rainstorm 💀 I mix neem, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and water and go to town 😅😂
@tango 🤣🤣🤣
But what ratios tho😳🤔😅
@PlantingPeace oh I’m the same as @kscape with the chef’s measurements lol, but I basically put about 3/4 of an inch of hydrogen peroxide on the bottom (since it’s basically fancy water with extra oxygen), a tablespoon or so of alcohol, and a couple of sprays of this brand Neem Oil. Then fill the rest with water. Think it’s 16 oz bottle?
@tango 🤣 you guys and your chefs kiss 🤣
Got it! Jus me taking some notes for future reference if I ever need it 😉 thank you tango 🥰
@PlantingPeace of course!! It’s fun to give them a little spa day too every now and then. 😁 Plants are so rewarding!
@tango Right! 🤣🤣 #NotTodayPestsNotToday
100% isopropyl alcohol 😄 So far no bad reactions! Phew haha
@HoyaAddict I’m starting to wonder if high % alcohol isn’t hurting plants because it’s so concentrated that it immediately evaporates before it can cause any damage 🤔😅
