Mealies! 😫
I just found mealy bugs for the first time! There weren’t tons, so I think I caught it pretty quickly. I took the affected plants and their close neighbors, went over them with an alcohol q-tip, and sprayed the 💩 out of them with 70% alcohol. Wiped the cover pots down with Clorox wipes. They are now quarantined in a room with minimal light. I have no idea where they came from! I will keep a close eye on other plants.
Now to my questions: How far can mealies travel? How often do I spray with alcohol- daily? How long until I can return them to their windowsill? Am I missing any other steps to mitigate the outbreak? TIA! #help #mealybugs #MealyBugAttacks #PestControl

The ones that attack ur plants usually cannot fly so theres that! The q-tip w/alcohol is good idea but be careful how much 70% alcohol u spray on any plant. Its VERY drying and possibly can kill the plant. I wouldnt spray anymore but use Neem oil w/1T of Castile soap or just plain Neem if the scent doesnt bother u. The alcohol is meant to suffocate tge mealies so make sure ur not doing that to ur plant as well. Also make sure u turn off any grow light u have on plants ur spraying w/Neem oil as they can get burned.
@BuffCaperspurge Thanks for your input! I don’t have neem oil, but I do have Captain Jacks insecticidal soap (never used yet)- would that be better than the alcohol? Spray daily? No lights where I’m quarantining them. How long does this usually last?
@SlinkyFivespot8 I haven’t used Captain Jack’s yet but for what it’s worth, it was highly recommended to me by a plant seller once. I told her I planned on trying it out once I finished off my bottle of neem oil spray.
@QuesaPróspera Oh no not on string of turtles, they’re so delicate and difficult to begin with! Good luck!!
How long have you been fighting the mealies? I didn’t use the Captain Jacks yet because I’m worried about using it indoors- and it just snowed here. So still using just alcohol, but I didn’t see any more bugs when I checked yesterday. I just don’t want to move them back prematurely and infest the rest of my living room jungle!

@SlinkyFivespot8 I’ve been drenching them with my neem oil spray for about three weeks now, and I haven’t moved them from their spot hanging in the window. Miraculously, my other plants hanging there don’t seem to be affected, but I still scooted it further away just in case 😅
@SlinkyFivespot8 thatll work!! What u wanna do and what the alcohol on q-tips do is suffocate so im sure the Cap’n Jacks will do just fine. I recommend getting some Neem oil to have on hand. Its versatile and relatively inexpensive, natural and mixed w a little Castile soap takes away the strong offensive odor some folks cant tolerate. Cadtile soap is safe for plants which is y i mention it & rememver to turn off grow lights when u spray the Neem or it could burn some leaves !!
