Hi! I’m only 83 and I am old to plants. Looks like you’ve made a good choice. Your cactus looks really healthy. But there are three things you need to do soon to make sure it stays healthy. 1) put it in a terracotta pot with holes in the bottom for drainage. These plants’ roots need to breathe like we do. 2) use succulent or cactus soil instead of regular soil. These plants live in the desert and have adapted to grow in dry soil with short periods of drenching rain. They will die if their roots stay wet. 3) Don’t water your plant until the soil is very dry. I test my soil by using a wooden skewer like you would use to see if a cake is done. I push it into the soil and only if it comes out dry do I water. And when I water I soak the pot in a shallow tray with water in it. I use rain water because plants don’t like the chlorine in city water. But you can also use distilled water. You have it in bright sun which is right. If you just got it you don’t need to do anything for several weeks since plants for sale usually are well watered at the store and it looks like it already has soil that will work for a long while. I’m glad you are interested in plants as I was a biology teacher for 30 years and love it when kids want to take care of living things. Keep in touch and I’ll help you along if you like. 🌵 oh and Deb is a friend of mine and also gives good advice.
Put it in a sunny spot and only water when it’s completely dry, like every 3-4 weeks! You’ll be able to tell because the pot is getting lightweight.
