I mean, surefire way to tell is if buds start dropping prematurely. @MusicalRedmint might be able to tell
Wow, those are some spikes.
I agree with @Araceae. You might not be able to tell until the buds drop. Which would be a shame, but not unexpected and unrelated to the health of the orchid (which generally looks fine to me at first glance).
Buds ate the most sensitive to any kind of stress, so they can drop even from as little as a move to a different location: a change in humidity and light at the new location or colder temperatures during transport can even be enough for that. If that happens, just know that at this point there probably was nothing you could have done. It's tricky, sending orchids in bud.
As for an assessment of general health: most of the time the leaves show the first signs that there might be something amiss with most orchids. They usually should be firm and plump. With oncidiums, obviously, less plump, but even they should be more or less upright and not floppy.
Also typical signs of dehydration are: shriveling of the pseudobulbs (those round bulbous growths) and browning leaf tips (especially during summer. They are cooler growers - relative to other orchids - and need you to keep up with watering during the warmer months).
For now it looks gorgeous and the buds seem far enough that most should make it. ๐Ÿคž
If you have more questions, just give us a shout. The #orchidlovers could help more people see it, if you include it in your next post. Enjoy your bloom
@Araceae thank you!
@MusicalRedmint I really appreciate such a detailed response! Thank you for sharing your orchid expertise with me!
You are welcome. It's a rainy day, i had some time and I have a oncidium in bloom in front of my eyes and nose myself at this moment and just want to spread the joy. hope you will soon as well ๐Ÿ˜€ (Funnily enough, mine even smells similar to yours, though it's not a sherry baby. ๐Ÿ˜€)
have fun with your orchid and ask on #orchidlovers if there are any more questions. The Greg orchid community is full of nice and knowledgeable people.
@MusicalRedmint I now have some beautiful blooms! #OrchidLovers
What a beautiful bloom. Congrats. If you want to share with more people: Greg is a bit odd in that hashtags only work in the the original post, not the comments. So you could either edit it in there or - since even then it would not appear on most feeds because those are ordered chronologically, maybe create a new post with the hashtag (and maybe the very popular more general #happyplants or #plantsmakepeoplehappy hashtags) and those gorgeous pictures. Enjoy your blooms
