Raised translucent speckles on my alocasia regal shield?

I've had this alocasia for about a year now, it was super happy all last summer, although slowed down over the winter
The last leaf it produced came out with all these weird speckles- I just ignored it for a while but now it seems to be spreading to other leaves. I've had a good look at the plant and I can't see any signs of spider mites- I don't think it's an insect issue #pestcontrol #alocasiaaddicts

Hi Bird, welcome to Greg!

Unfortunately, it looks like a different pest to me - thrips.
They often attack new growth and leave marks just like that. Many times you don't see the adults first but you do see little black spots on the underside of the leaves.

You'll want to remove as many as possible and then treat the plant. Here are some options:

1. Quarantine the plant (not optional).
2. Clean the leaves: shower, leaf cleaner, lint roller, take your pick.
3. Spray with insecticidal soap (I like Natria)
4. Realistically, you have to get every life cycle so this is going to be a process. You can keep repeat the above or take stronger measures by adding beneficial bugs to eat the thrip or you can put systemic pesticides in your soil to make your plant(s) toxic.

Be sure to check your other plants and good luck!
Spider mites were my first thought! Lol How is the lighting? Could it be sunburn? I would treat for spider mites just to be safe, but I’m following this post to see if there are any other suggestions! I just got my first alocasia and I’ve heard they can be picky!
I agree with thrips. πŸ˜• sorry you’re dealing with this, they are a pain! I could be wrong but it looks like there are a few in the pic of the underside. @PlantMompy gave great advice!
