I can’t fix root rot, what am I doing wrong?
I tend to buy plants that arrive at my home with root rot. I have yet to be able to save one. I have tried two different strategies;
1: Cut off all the rot with sanitized shears and spray down with remaining roots with a 1/4 hydrogen peroxide 3/4 water mixture. New soil and pot. Dead.
2: Cut off all rot with sanitized shears, wash the roots with dawn, rinse thoroughly, soak in 1/3 hydrogen peroxide, 2/3 water for 30 minutes, wash again. New soil and pot. Dead.

What plant was it ? Some plants really hate if you mess with their root system. Also how wet was the soil you put them back into ? Had the pot drainage and when did you water it after ? Ahhh and how bad was the root rot when you discovered it ? @Elk
@Elk I agree with @Freaksarebusy. How wet is the soil you repot them into? Are you using a new pot and new soil after soaking the roots? Don’t water it immediately give it a couple of days to adjust then water lightly throughout the transition. Good luck and happy growing!
@Freaksarebusy 2 Pothos and a Peace Lily, the soil I put them in was dry, new pot, I didnt water it afterwards, the roots were slightly brown at the end, I discovered it pretty early on.
@Arid_oasis I did everything correct that you mentioned, but they still have the rot
Hmmm It could be that you didn’t get everything that was infected or too much of healthy roots. For the future I would try mix of both methods, only cut the part that looks/feels infected right after that so the rotting part is gone and the ends feel firm and not slimy or mushy. Than you could stick with spraying it but I like giving it a little bath. By little I mean two parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide and I let them stay there for like 1-2 minutes. After that I let them dry of a little before putting them back in the soil. Can I ask how the overwatering happened because getting that adjusted is easier than treating the root rot ? 😅 also keep in mind some roots just get stained from the soil, not every slightly brown root has to be root rot in the beginning I had a hard time differentiating that. 😅 I really wish you the best of luck and no more root rot 🤞🏻🍀 @Elk
@Freaksarebusy The overwatering was an issue before I received the plant. The three plants that I have bought, or gotten delivered recently have all within the next few days shown signs of root rot.
@Freaksarebusy Also I’m not just looking at the root color to know it’s rot. The leaves are rapidly yellowing and browning.
@SvelteKingfern Putting it back in the rot soil?
Don’t put it back in the soil it rotted in, it will start rotting again 😅 i repot almost all my plants straight after getting them, yes they can get shocked from that but in my experience it’s better to repot them especially when you suspect them being sick😅 with what your saying I suspect it was too far gone or maybe there was already rot in the tuber, my only tip for the next time would be to try and keep as much healthy root as possible. I know losing plant really suck especially if it not really you fault or don’t have an answer to way 😅 I wish you the best of luck next time and don’t give up 🫶🏻 @Elk
@SvelteKingfern You said not to repot?
@Freaksarebusy So there is no way to fix it?
To fix what ? Do you still have a plant with root rot and want help fixing that ? Or do you mean the technique to treat it ? 😅 @Elk
Yes, I said not to repot. The reason is, the plant is overwatered and already stressed. If overwatering was short term, and the plant looks reasonably healthy, we can assume that the roots are still OK. Waiting for the soil to dry, and not repotting, is much less stress for the plant.
Plants are reasonably resistant to 1 or 2 overwaterings (not to long term overwatering), otherwise any rain would have caused plants dying outdoors.
That's my reasoning. Do you follow my reasoning?

@SvelteKingfern Yes, but I mentioned that I could already see signs of root rot. So I have had plants that have just been slightly overwatered, and yes, I don’t repot those, but it seems unwise to assume the watering history of a new plant. I always check the roots just in case.
@Freaksarebusy Technique to treat it
Not really from what you saying you not doing anything really wrong just try to not cut too much of that would be the only you maybe could’ve done “better” anything else you said don’t really give a answer to why they died 😅 @Elk
