@DrJay2ThaK Yes, trimming back polka dot plants (Hypoestes phyllostachya) is recommended to prevent them from becoming leggy and to encourage bushier growth. Regular pruning, especially pinching off the tips, helps maintain a more compact and attractive shape.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Why prune?
Polka dot plants are known to grow tall and lanky, especially if they don't receive enough light. Pruning helps control their size and shape, preventing them from becoming unattractive.
How to prune:
Pinching: Regularly pinch off the tips of the stems, especially the top two leaves, to encourage branching and bushier growth.
Cutting: Use clean, sharp shears or scissors to make cuts just above a leaf node (the point where a leaf attaches to the stem). This encourages new growth from that node.
Selective pruning: When aiming for a natural shape, follow the plant's growth pattern and prune selectively.
Dead leaves: Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to redirect the plant's energy to new growth.
When to prune:
Prune regularly throughout the growing season, especially when the plant starts to look leggy. If the plant flowers, remove the flower spike to prevent it from going into dormancy.
Benefits of pruning:
Pruning not only improves the plant's appearance but also promotes healthier growth and more vibrant foliage.

@DrJay2ThaK Totally agree with Sherri @Preciousplants1 yes to trimming, especially now that it’s getting leggy and flowering! Once Polka Dot Plants start blooming, they often go into end of season mode and stretch out like they’re trying to grab the remote from across the couch. πŸ˜…
Snip those tall flower spikes and any super leggy stems just above a leaf node. It’ll redirect energy back into bushy, compact growth and keep that pink polka-dot drama strong. Bonus: you can root the cuttings and double your plant fam!…Basically…give it a haircut now, and you’ll get a glow-up later. Keep us posted on the post snip transformation!
