My bay laurel is dead/dying

Just bought this plant and was very healthy and just rapidly died.
27โ€ pot with drainage
Last watered 1 month ago
This plant is showing several signs of major stress. My first thought looking at the photos is that the pot is far too big for this size plant, which can lead to overwatering and root rot. But it also looks like it might be suffering from a pest infestation. I see some black specks on the undersides of leaves, which is a telltale sign of thrips. I'd suggest removing all the dead leaves and cutting the stem back to only healthy tissue (remove the portion that's turned black). Then move it to a much smaller pot. The general guideline for pot size is that it shouldn't be more than 2-3" bigger than a plant's root ball. Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings. If you can check the undersides of leaves and tell me if you see tiny black specks, that will confirm thrips (the black specks are their poop).
