Can someone explain?

Hi, I have a pachyphytum and a ghost plant. While it looks like the pachyphytum is doing great I’m not so sure on the ghost plant. Every time I’ve watered Ghosty the bottom leaves become soft and squishy. Kind of gummy. I’ve plucked them off as they start drying up. Today I took 2 off and I noticed that the same thing happened to the pachyphytum. Can someone please tell me why this happens and what I’m doing wrong? I have them in succulent soil and terracotta pots. I actually moved Ghosty into a small pot as someone here told me I might have had him in wrong size pot. The leaf on the right is from the pachyphytum and the left is from the ghost plant. Please help, I don’t want to kill my plant babies. #GhostPlant #PachyphytumAquamarine #Pachyphytum #SucculentSquad
Hi, I recommend waiting until these guys show signs of thirst to water. Wait until they show a little wrinkling of the bottom leaves.

With these guys, if you water and they already have enough water and are full, the leaves will actually become mushy and die off.

Just wait until they wrinkle to water. Sometimes that could be 2-4 weeks
Adding to what @GreenThumbSC has stated, the translucent foliage is a sign that it’s holding too much water.
@GreenThumbSC @AnthuriumQueen thank you! I do wait to water them but someone told me that if the leaves can be folded like a taco it’s a sign they need water. Should I not go by that?

I do touch the soil to feel if it’s dry and most of the time it does feel dry.
@HTNKMP I believe you should see the dormancy chart and try to make certain you are aware of when they are awake and when they are not. Finding out exactly what plant you have helps as well. During dormancy, they don’t need to be watered as much. During periods of being awake, they are actively growing and need the water. The issue is that sometimes, the pot is too large or the plant isn’t getting enough light. Where are you keeping it? How large is the pot? The plant itself needs to have a happy medium to thrive. Also, how do you check the moisture of the soil? Do you usually check the top or the bottom? It should be through the bottom of the pot through the drainage hole. If it’s damp, do not water. Wait and check again. Once it is dry, wait a few days then water. Your succulents only grow between waterings.

The folding leaf thing is only for dormant plants but if you aren’t sure if it’s dormant, then try to find out so you can care for it accordingly.

Can you share a pic along with details on pot size and how far from the light it is? It’ll make it easier for us to assist you. 🌿
@AnthuriumQueen the ghost plant is in a 3inch pot and pachyphytum plant is in a 4 inch pot. Both are terracotta pots. They are both on desk in front of a window but I do have a grow light on them. I move the top layer of rock and touch the soil. I also use a toothpick to dig deeper and feel that dirt to see if it needs water. The drain hole at the bottom is covered with a wire meah disk to keep the dirt from falling out.
@HTNKMP here’s the image for dormancy. Check which yours fall under and adjust care accordingly.
@AnthuriumQueen sorry for the late reply. Thank you for your help. It looks like both of mine are winter growers. So I should be watering them more often but not a lot correct?
@HTNKMP if yours are winter growers, it’s time to cut back on the watering as we move into Spring.
@AnthuriumQueen thank you so much for your insight. I will keep all this in mind as I try to care for them correctly.
Well, pachyphytums and succulents in general, their leaves are made to hold water due to where they (pachyphytums) come from. Try to not over water them! You can wait mabye till the leaves don't dry out but slightly thin or, wait for the soil to be completely dry.
