How do I propagate my tradescantia nanouk?

If you want to propagate them in water, just clip the lower leaves off the stems (so the leaves don't rot in the water) and place them in a cup or glass. You can then put it out as a pretty plant while the stems are growing roots. (:

When the roots are long enough, tag me and I can show you how to carefully pot them. These are very fragile plants and they break easily- BUT the propagate easily so if you break off a piece, propagate it! ☺️
To propagate a nanouk stem cutting in water, take a cutting that is a few inches long and remove the leaves from the bottom. Pop in a glass of water, ensuring that the top foliage isn't submerged. After a few weeks, you'll have a good set of branch new roots and will be able to plant it!
You can cut between the nodes (growth points) and either propagate them in water or back into the soil.

I cut mine and press a hole into the soil with a chopstick or pencil or stick and place the end of the cutting back into the soil. You can do it with or without rooting hormone.
@sarahsalith hahaha! Great minds!
@sarahsalith im scared to cut it what if it dies
@leafmealone247 sometimes plants die- but I have a feeling that it has a good chance to live. I'll do it with you. Hold on. 😁
@sarahsalith ty waht do you mean
We'll do both ways: water and soil. (: Don't laugh at my plant- I haven't pulled it out in a while and there are some brown leaves. πŸ€ͺ
Okay- I cleaned my scissors by spraying them with rubbing alcohol and I cut about nine pieces.
@sarahsalith can u plz tell me the care for my nanouk
@sarahsalith ty for teaching me how to propagate my tradescantia nanouk
I take my stick and I make a little hole where I want the stem to go. I put the stem in the hole and make another hole for another stem. πŸ˜„
I keep my plant in bright, indirect light. I water it when the soil is dry. Many times, I can just pick up the pot and feel how heavy it is. I've learned how heavy it feels when it's wet and when it's dry.

The brighter the light, the more vivid the colors are - but no direct light unless the plant has been slowly acclimated to the light.
@sarahsalith if i prop it in soil wont the soilneed to be more mosit and wont that cause root rot to my plant
@leafmealone247 Good call! I forgot to say that I watered my plant before I stuck the stems in the soil. It's just needs to be watered as usual- nothing different. Watering the soil makes it easier to put the stems in and it gives the freshly cut stems a little boost. I didn't use rooting hormone- just soil and water.
@sarahsalith did i do it right?
@sarahsalith is it correct the pic i posted did i cut it right
Sorry- I was making lunch for the kiddos. It's a bit short, but its still good. Just make a tiny depression in the soil of your plant and gently press it into the soil.

Don't disturb it for a few weeks- by then, it should have roots!
@sarahsalith thank you im scared if it will die
@sarahsalith do u know how to propagate a polka dot plant?
Raja, sometimes plants die. It's okay. Making mistakes is how we learn and become better. Sometimes, no matter what we do, a plant will die. BUT! You still have a great rooted plant and if the little piece dies, you can begin again. πŸ’š But I think it has a wonderful chance of survival.
@sarahsalith awww thank you for that
A polka dot plant? Let's chop up another plant. πŸ˜‰

These plants definitely need to be cut back if you want to keep them bushy. οΏΌ

Once you have the size plant that you want, it's easy to pinch off new growth. Pinching off new growth sends the energy back to the stem and the roots of the plant and the plant will keep growingοΏΌοΏΌ.

I'm going to cut it at the purple line because there are two new sets of leaves beginning to grow below it.
It's probably not the best vessel in which to propagate plants, but it's what I have in my plant room without looking somewhere else.οΏΌ

I clipped the stems and took off the bottom leaves. I placed them in the water and I'll have to check the water daily to make sure the stems are still in the water. The water will evaporate and the stems need to stay in the water while they are rooting.

There are teeny tiny leaves on the stem of the plant that will produce new growth in a few weeks! ☺️
@sarahsalith u know how u said that to put the nanouk prop in soil right? Well why does my props leaves feel so thin
The young leaves feel thin.

EDIT- the older and larger they get, they feel a bit stiffer.
@sarahsalitone one of the older leafs feel very thin
Sorry- kiddos keeping me busy. (: I wouldn't worry about the leaf. Is that the only one?
@leafmealone247 πŸ€” Let me go to my plant.
My leaves feel slightly rubbery and a tab bit tough.
Mine was easy to propagate so long as I paid attention to the root system and what leaves would function in soil or which ones would do better first in water. Here’s mine! Mama and babies lol

The other babies didnt make it
