I purchased this plant online. I noticed that it has like...

Sounds like they sent you some fungus gnats along with your new plant. They arenβt as horrible as the name π€ͺ Theyβre very common & live and breed in moist soil. The easiest way to get rid of them without chemicals are sticky traps. Also allow the top of the soil to dry out between watering and donβt allow sitting water in the saucer below it. These moist places attract fungus gnats and itβs where theyβll lay eggs. A layer of lightweight sand on top can deter them because it dries out quickly making your plant less attractive as a breeding ground. Other things that attract gnats - damp sponges, moist sinks and shower drains so keep your plant away from these things until you get the fungus gnats under control.
@AlwaysRedlion42 you can get a bunch of sticky traps cheap. Walmart has them for like $5. Hereβs a pic of what they look like and also ideas on where to place them, as well as how you can use sand on top of the soil.
Those fungus gnats are such a nuisance π΅βπ«π« π₯΄ They like to lay their eggs in the top couple inches of moist soil. I recommend ordering some sticky traps and a small bag of mosquito bits from Amazon or check a store near you. The sticky traps will help catch the adults and the mosquitos bits will help kill the larvae.
I personally make a βteaβ with the mosquito bits. Take an empty gallon jug and fill it with hot water leaving a couple inches of space from the top. Add the recommended amount of mosquito bits to it and shake it really good. Allow it to marinate and cool completely before using on your plants. You will top water as normal. This βteaβ will get pretty nasty if you donβt use it within a couple of days. So be sure to make a smaller batch if you donβt have a ton of plants to water. After using this treatment about 2-3 times, they should be gone. I water my snake plants once every 3 weeks or so, so youβll want to make a new batch if your watering schedule is few and far between π
To prevent this, you can do a couple of things- when you water your plants, put them in a tray and water from the bottom, so the top of the soil stays dry and/or you can add mosquito bits to your soil and that should help as well! Hope that helps!
