Begonia Help
I’m a first time begonia owner and I’ve had nothing but leaves crisp up and fall. Here are the conditions:
- 4 inch plastic pot
- succulent type soil (well draining)
- 1 foot from my window (north facing)
- next to a grow light
The only thing I can think of is that because im unfortunately able to get her pot out of the decorative pot, I just guess how much water I need to use. But I try not to over pour. Could this be the cause? Any advice would be awesome!

Can you explain the pot situation better? Is it in a plastic pot with drainage holes and that is in a cover pot and it’s stuck? These want to almost completely dry out and then be doused with water till it’s running out of the drainage holes. So I think it’s important to be able to get that plastic pot out regularly while you water, partly so you can tell how wet/dry the soil is, and how the roots look. It might even need more of an aroid soil than a succulent soil. My instinct is that it might be getting enough water. Tagging @dreammachine who is my begonia go-to gal.
I agree with @MamaLinne about the importance of getting it out of the decorative pot to drain 👍🏻 Thst said, your plant looks good to me. When you say you’re getting dry crispy leaves, are they the leaves themselves or the sheaths the new leaves come out of? It’s totally normal that the sheaths dry up and fall off 😊 (all the brown bits between my leaves are the sheaths)
@MamaLinne @debbiedo @robbi_rose yes, for begonias it’s VERY important to be able to get it out of the pot, and know just how much water they’re getting. Begonia roots are so fragile and delicate and it’s very easy to overwater them. I make sure my begonias are bone dry before I water them again. (Not dry for days, mind you, but I try to water them the day I realize they’ve become 100% dry)
But we also need to know which parts are getting brown and crispy. Is it the leaf tips? Where the leaf comes to a point? Like my pic 1️⃣? If yes, then your plant is overwatered or was watered too soon at least one time.
But if the brown crispy bits are like my pic 2️⃣ and are the old sheaths drying up, these are completely normal. (In fact, it is one of my biggest pleasures…to go around picking off all these crispy sheaths 🤤 I can’t be the only weirdo here, right? 😅 It gives me completely guilt-free guilty pleasure vibes 🤣)
