Sure, they won't grow as quickly and won't thrive like they would in a chunky soil. Is yours currently in soil? Are you thinking of moving it to water due to root rot? Water doesn't contain the nutrients plants need like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc. So if you plant on keeping it in water long term, I'd recommend adding a hydroponic fertilizer.
