One way to tell is when roots start showing through the bottom drainage holes. Also if the plant is quite top heavy and having a hard time staying upright. The general guide for pot sizing is that the new pot shouldn't be more than 2-3" bigger than the root ball/previous pot, otherwise it can lead to overwatering and root rot.
