predatory thrips??

hey all! so i know there are different kinds of thrips and i was wondering if anyone knew how to identify them. on one of my plants the thrips are very small, and i can smoosh them with my finger, and they will die. on another plant though, the thrips are much larger and are actually like hard? i try and kill them with my finger and they just don’t die. the bigger thrips are also way more active and i actually see them flying around in my greenhouse cabinet, compared to crawling around on the plant. i just wanna know if they are beneficial and if i shouldn’t kill them? here are some pictures for comparison 1st pic is the bigger ones, 2nd is the small ones, then 3rd is compared next to eachother. #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PestControl #GrowLights #annapop
@ForFoxSake you use beneficial bugs right? do you know anything about this:(
I would have thought the bugs on the yellow sticker are fungus gnats. 🤔
Fungus gnats @annapop not beneficial but the larvae are a food source for beneficial bugs like 🐞 lady beetles and predatory mites, praying mantis, etc
@BeesZenGarden @ForFoxSake here’s the bigger ones next to a fungus gnat, are they just like baby fungus gnats? and i’m freaking out for no reason??
@annapop I’m really not an expert at this… I thought thrips were tiny and you couldn’t reslly see them, only the damage they cause?… 🤔
@annapop looks like some sort of mosquito to me
This is the thrip lifecycle for visual reference
And they are very small and won’t care about the sticky pad they will be on the leaves
To me it looks like a lot of gnats and no thrips
I agree that they look like gnats but you should definitely be able to squish gnats so I'm not sure...
@WickedValkyrie right? they are the weirdest bugs ever and i have no idea what they are😭
@sarahsalith any idea?
At first, when you said they were hard, I thought of flying ants. But in the other pictures, they do look like little mosquitoes.

It so hard to tell sometimes in a picture. But I don't think they are beneficial.

Thanks for the tag, @WickedValkyrie 😁
@sarahsalith FLYING ANTS???
@sarahsalith omg this totally looks like them! why are they in my plants😭😭
@annapop I'm certain seasons, they swarm. They just happen to swarm in your plants. They had eggs, hatched, and POOF! Flying ants. Did you say they were IN a cabinet?
@sarahsalith in my ikea greenhouse cabinet, i have an air conditioner in my window, and i think one might’ve gotten in through that, and then the cabinet is pretty warm so it’s probably the perfect environment😭 i got some diatomaceous earth that i will put on the soil for now.
@annapop sounds like a plan! The males don't live long, maybe two days. The females will leave soon and find their own spot ... just hopefully not in another cabinet! 😉
