Do I repot? How big of a pot?

Today I see a leaf that looks like it’s rotting, I check the plant because I haven’t watered it since I got it almost a month ago. It shouldn’t be moist at all but the dirt still is. I try to pull the nursery pot out of the cover pot and can barely pull it out? When I do, I see the nursery pot literally stretching over the roots and the rhizomes.

I couldn’t get the plant out of the nursery pot, so I made a slit and it bursts open. I see this inside the pot. There’s about 5 rhizomes the size of golf balls inside this 4” H X 4”W pot. That seems like a lot to me, but I don’t know much about #ZzPlant. Like if they like tight roots etc etc. Any advice is much appreciated.

4” pot with drainage

I would repot in a pot that’s about two inches bigger than the current pot, it probably just needs new dirt and a new pot, it looks like it’s outgrown the pot. Sometimes that can cause leaves to drop.
The roots look healthy, so it should be fine just needs some new nutrients and pot
@Imissmydeaddog @TidyTigerpear if it is in a 4” pot now, will a 6” be too big?
What about those rhizomes @TidyTigerpear should they be left in the pot or harvested to make a new plant.
@Stall54Jo yes, thank you! I know tubers, like day lilies, need to be divided every 3 years. I didn’t know if these are like that. I did read the zz plants roots are strong enough to shatter a pot 😬. I would like to avoid that 😂
Absolutely @TheOddAsity I have never replanted corms or rhizomes. I wish you luck with this. One day, I won't have a choice. My ZZ is growing with 3 new stalks this month.
@Stall54Jo yeeaaahh, when I opened up this nursery pot there wasn’t much “dirt”. It was all roots and rhizomes. I placed it into a bigger pot and sprinkled some soil around it until I can get through Christmas and then sit down and look at it. On of the rhizomes feel out of the group and I panicked a bit 😂
Nice roots. Get a large pot they grow tall. I love mine
It should do very nicely in its new pot and soil. These plants are amazing and date back thousands of years. Enjoy!!!!
I’d definitely upgrade to a nursing pot 2 inches bigger. Sometimes it’s debated, but I would remove as much of the old soil as you can. You don’t have to break the roots apart but remove the soil you can see
I just did this with my money tree that was all roots and very little soil. 2” up is what I did as well. Side note - I cut all of my plants out of their nursery planters like that, when I replant! I think it’s easier that way 🤓
