Hi Hazel πŸ‘‹ You'll find the deeper you delve into most aspects of plant care the deeper the tunnel goes! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ And soil is no exception... It can get as simple or as complex as you want (for example, I have different soil mixes for Maranta, Epipremnum, Philis, Syngos, Monstys and succulents! But I am a bit strange πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€£).

I would go for a good quality COIR based (no peat if possible please! It's horrible for the environment and coir is just as good) potting soil, perlite and some orchid bark (fine grade if your plants aren't huge or it tends to swamp the pot! πŸ˜‚ And makes dip testing really difficult! Lol).

You're in CA right? I'll see if some of my American planty peeps can recommend some good options (I'm in Scotland so the market is totally different... If you have Soil Ninja over there their stuff is FAB, even for a crazy mixologist like me! Haha πŸ˜‚)
#theamigos #brunchataudreys hey lovelies!! What potting soil are you all using at the mo, especially those in California 🌞 xx
Where did you got them? i got mine in Lowes last August and i didn’t change their soil, but i put my brasil in self watering pot with wick and only add water in the reservoir when the top soil is dry and they are both in grow light.
Very nice!
@LordPuka I mix my own. I have all of my plants planted in a Succulent Soil mixed with some perlite. It works well for all plant types. Gorgeous plants btw! The Calathea is especially spectacular! She's on my short list πŸ˜πŸ’š
@LordPuka the philodendron and two pothos are all aroids that like to dry out almost completely between waterings, so you can use the same soil mix for those three. Your prayer plant likes its soil to stay a bit more moist. If you're looking to get something pre-mixed and ready to go straight out of the bag, there are plenty of soil blends made specifically for aroids available on Amazon.

Personally, I like to make my own (nothing super complicated or pricey). Here's my aroid mix:
β€’ 1 part orchid bark or orchid potting mix (Better-Gro makes a great mix with bark, horticultural charcoal, & coarse-grade perlite, plus it's super cheap).
β€’ 1 part perlite
β€’ 1 part coconut coir (the kind marketed specifically for plants is crazy expensive; I buy compressed blocks from the reptile dept at my local pet food store πŸ˜›)
β€’ 1 part potting soil (I just use whatever I have on hand; for me it's usually cacti/succulent soil, but any indoor potting mix will do)
β€’ handful of earthworm castings (or other compost material).

This mix will also work fine for your prayer plant, but feel free to add a bit more coconut coir since it helps retain moisture ☺️

Sorry for the insanely long response lol 😜 Good luck with your lovely plants! If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask πŸ€—
