New Alocasia Parent

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m new to owning plants and I decided since my other plants are thriving with my new found green thumb that I will try the challenge of owning an alocasia. Any tips? I would appreciate lots.

How beautiful! Sheโ€™s in a mature state, which makes your care much easier than if you had, like, a tissue culture or a corm. Alocasiaโ€™s can be fussy, but if you tend to their needs, they will be wonderful to you! So I recommend a good chunky potting mix with tree fern fiber. You want to water with available rainwater; if not available, then distilled. Alocasiaโ€™s prefer humidities around 60-80 percent and love bright indirect light. Make sure itโ€™s getting a good amount of air flowing through the pot. In the growing season, they will benefit from a little heavier feeding; I use gold leaf fertilizer and Powersi silica with a very diluted chelated iron 6%. My choices are on the pricey side, but itโ€™s for my alocasias. So Iโ€™m willing, but some people will advise not using silica. If you choose to use a different one, like gold leaf or something similar, like a Gt foliage focus or any 20-20-20 you like. Since itโ€™s more mature, you should be able to use it as directed, but if worried, just take it down about a third of the way, and you should be good. Side note, however, make sure to clean these leaves every few weeks; they are sensitive to environmental conditions. Make sure you have good air circulation. Alocasia can and will benefit from being planted a little deeper. Lastly, avoid watering on the leaves and instead water around the edges of the pot so the roots pull and grow out to the side, building a stronger plant and growth system. - side note: flowering on Alocasiaโ€™s can be very trying on them, so if it starts to show signs of decline while flowering, remove the flower and focus on the plant rebuilding itself.
