Tips for making Dwarf Jade into an indoor Bonsai?
So my dad has recently got me into Bonsaiβs and I while looking at his bonsai book and saw that a Jade could be one I thought I should do it, I know mostly how to care for Jades, but have no idea how to make one a bonsai.

You have two options to start. The easy option, go shopping to find one - can cost a bit and might be hard to find.
Option two, take an inexpensive Jade and transplant into a large container and let it grow wild for two years (you want the trunk to thicken). After that you can transplant into a smaller bonsai style pot and aggressively prune the branches.
Iβm doing option two with a few different trees, it takes time but rewarding. Read about how jades grow and learn about fertilizing them, that way you can push its growth in those two years.
I can take a look through my bonsai books for any info I might be able to find on jades if youβre interested.

@FamedGymealily hello! So Iβve already got a in my eyes a pretty big (medium idk) Jade that I bought two days ago for ten bucks, Iβll have to get a picture of it later though, but itβs got some thickish trunks
@LikelyChaya33 great that you have one already, send a couple of photos when you have a chance.

My dad is into bonsai, but still he has never done a bonsai with a jade before, I also donβt know what pot I should be looking for, I did look at his bonsai book and saw something that was called a root-over-rock method or rock-over-root method, idk, I wanted to do that method, it was where I pot the rock in soil and put the roots of my bonsai over it, I just liked how it looked from what I saw in the book, but if that is more of an method for people who arenβt beginners (Iβm obviously a beginner XD) please do let me know of any other methods that look cool/cute for Dwarf Jades in the bonsai style, I hope this all makes sense haha

@LikelyChaya33 if you can find a good rock itβs easy to do. Any kind of rock that is porous or has texture for the roots to grab on to works best. I am doing this style with a small red pine I have.
The easiest method goes hand in hand with what I described earlier, burying the root and rock together for a season in a deep container. The following year you uncover it to see how itβs progressing.
For the time being donβt worry about a bonsai pot, youβll get more growth from a larger planter.

@LikelyChaya33 to find other suitable styles it helps to look at how jadeβs grow in the wild, and then try to mimic that but on a smaller bonsai scale.
@LikelyChaya33 Yes, a jade plant can be grown into a fantastic bonsai tree. Both the common Jade (Crassula ovata) and the Dwarf Jade / Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra) work great. They are very forgiving, grow thick trunks fast, and tolerate heavy pruning, making them ideal for beginners. Steps to Make a Jade BonsaiChoose your plant: Start with a thick-stemmed cutting or an established nursery plant.Prune hard: Cut back unwanted lower branches and top growth to force the trunk to thicken and shape the canopy. Use gritty soil: Plant it in fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with perlite or pumice so roots do not rot.Water sparingly: Let the soil dry completely between watering sessions.Provide full sun: Place your jade in the brightest spot possible so it stays compact.
