@SelectBearsear Brown spots on a Variegated Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica) are primarily caused by overwatering, fungal or bacterial infections, sunburn, or low humidity. Because the creamy-white sections of variegated leaves lack chlorophyll, they are extremely delicate and prone to damage. The exact cause of the spots often depends on how they look and where they appear: Overwatering & Root Rot (Soft, mushy spots): Excess moisture in the soil drowns roots and creates the perfect environment for fungi. This often shows up as large, soft brown or black spots, frequently surrounded by a yellow halo. Sunburn (Crispy, bleached spots): Variegated leaves are highly sensitive to strong, direct sunlight or close grow lights. Intense light easily scorches the white areas, creating dry, crispy, or bleached brown patches. Fungal or Bacterial Infections (Irregular rust spots): Fungal spores can take hold if water is left sitting on the leaves, especially in humid environments. These appear as small, irregular reddish-brown or dark spots. Underwatering (Crispy edges): If the spots are small, papery, and primarily on the tips or edges, the plant may be suffering from dehydration or dry household air. To confirm the specific issue, look at the overall health and placement of the plant. Option 1: Remove the Entire LeafWhen to do it: If the leaf is more than 50% damaged or yellowed, or if you suspect the spot is a spreading fungal or bacterial infection. How to do it: Cut the leaf stem (petiole) clean off, about half an inch away from the main branch. Option 2: Cut Out Just the SpotWhen to do it: If the leaf is mostly green and healthy, and you are only trying to improve the plant's aesthetic. How to do it: Trim around the spot, leaving a tiny margin of brown tissue rather than cutting into the living, green part. Cutting into the healthy green area will result in a brand-new brown edge on the leaf.
