Is this yellow signs of rot? Do I keep taking Leaves off ...
He has NOT been doing well and i should have chopped him sooner! completely rotted root, have removed 4 leaves already. I have never had luck with aloes in the past but this is one of the few plants in my collection that are “my partner’s” and he isnt going to take the news well. Want to do this right 🙏

In all honesty, I lost a few too many plants this year due to a broken wrist this winter. I have been doing all you say; when checking his roots last month there no longer were any but I didn’t note any rot at that time. I supported him in a much smaller pot, waiting for a sign of improvement 🫠which brings us here, after no signs, with hopefully something to save. @DynamoMahoe You are telling me how to care for a healthy Aloe which I do not have. Any insight on Chopping an aloe?
@LoyalYellowrose Hi Beth, you can totally chop and restart this aloe 🤗 I am by no means an aloe expert, but if this were my aloe, I would chop it here where I marked a red line.
After you chop it, it’s important to let it callous over, that is, air dry, for about a week, before repotting. After repotting, don’t water for another week or two. You’ll want it to get over its shock, and any water right now during that time will quite possibly just sit and rot it further.

@LoyalYellowrose whoops pressed send too soon 😅 If you cut here and you still see signs of rot, I would cut further up the stem. You might need to remove another leaf or two, but they can root anywhere along their stem.
@DreamMachine a few more leaves gone 😬😅 wondering if i should make a couple chops?? He is so scraggly and kinked! Can I prop the leaves I have been taking off too?
@LoyalYellowrose that’s looking pretty good! You see those yellow/orange marks/bumps? Those are where roots will grow from!
Unfortunately, no. I’ve heard rumors of people being successful when they pull a whole leaf carefully off, but I’m not sure if those were true. 🤷♀️ You normally would need some of the stem to have a successful prop. I think you’ll have a good chance if you just go ahead with him as he is!
