RIP “Tickle Me” Baby Toes-my first planticide😢😢😢😢 I usually bottom water all my succulents-I top watered one day and they were destroyed!!!!! All scattered and mushy. I’m just a couple of months into my first plant adventures-all of my other plants are doing really well. I’m not sharing a death picture because it’s so sad. Here’s to the memories little baby toes #HappyPlants #SucculentSquad

@HappySelah25 I have read that moisture meters may not be totally accurate with succulents. I don’t own one. “Chopstick Method” : Stick a wooden chopstick/bamboo skewer down to the bottom of the pot. Let is sit a few seconds or so. When you pull it out, if there is any dirt stuck on it don’t water. If the end of my skewer even feels damp, I hold off on watering. I learned about the chopstick method from others here on Greg. I use the bamboo skewers because you can buy a whole pack for cheap. When they get stained up and you have trouble telling if it’s dry, throw it out. I’m still on my first pack of skewers! It’s kind of like sticking that tooth pick in a cake to see if it’s done!
@HappySelah25 RIP😢
Yep these toes retain so much water the watering in this one is very minimal even in summer . Could get away with once a month watering on this one. Also I have learned the hard way to when bottom watering only let it soak up about half way or a bit less then the water will soak the rest of the way up to pot. I lost a crap ton of my succulents this spring and summer. For Texas we had a very unusual amount of rain and I was not always home to move my succulents away from the rain… usually we get a small amount and they thrive outside for the season… so RIP to many of mine !!!!!
@Hoyaobsessed it’s definitely a learning curve… I live in the Midwest so I haven’t tried putting my plants outside yet.
@HappySelah25 I live in Texas central Texas and they love it a ton of my tropicals love outside in the shade!! Hoyas love the morning sun and afternoon shade
@HappySelah25 I think it is a rite of passage in one’s succulent journey to kill a minimum of one by overwatering! Welcome to the club. I had overwatering/root rot issues last Summer into early Fall. Killed the most expensive one I had ordered. Lessons learned: Add the perlite to the succulent soil ( I also now add some Bonsai Jack’s Gritty Mix). 2. Use the chopstick method to check for moisture (I opted for a pack of bamboo skewers from the grocery store). 3. If you continue to have overwatering issues, switch out to terracotta pots. I found out my non-terracotta pots were VERY slow to dry out in the warmer weather. In the winter, our central heat kept everything drying out.
I borrowed my hubby’s humidity meter he uses in the room with his guitars. Our house is very humid in the summer. I don’t have experience with baby toes, but I have killed at least 1 aloe, a couple of gasterias, a tiger’s jaw, and a Haworthia.I have 4 haworthias that I thought were gone, but are now in various phases of re-rooting. I’ve passed the 2 year mark on my succulent journey and I still feel like I’m in the learning stage! It’s frustrating to lose one but you learn from it. I actually got brave enough to try again with another Tiger’s Jaw.

@RefinedSandwort wow! Can you explain the chop sticks method? I use a moisture meter everyday and only water when completely dry!!!
