@ActualFantasy22 If those are tiny holes there could be different reasons. A Golden Torch cactus (Echinopsis spachiana) usually develops sunken black spots or small pit-like holes due to alkaloid-releasing stress reactions, physical bruising, or localized fungal/bacterial lesions. Common Causes Alkaloid / Stress Scabs: Columnar cacti in this family store defensive alkaloids just beneath their skin. Minor triggers—like sudden temperature shifts, physical bumps, high humidity, or chemical pest sprays—can cause the tissue to react, leak dark fluid, and dry into a small black crater or scab. Pest Damage: Tiny insects like thrips or mites puncture the skin to feed, leaving behind tiny scars or dark residue that look like small holes as the tissue heals. Fungal or Bacterial Rot: If the "holes" feel soft, mushy, or wet to the touch, it is active rot caused by overwatering or poor airflow holding moisture against the skin. How to Tell if It's Dangerous Harmless: The spots are hard, dry, do not spread, and the surrounding green flesh looks firm. Harmful: The black areas are soft, expanding, oozing foul liquid, or sinking deeper into the core of the column.
@Ms.Persnickety I haven’t I’ve been to scared to do it, and I think so. I have never fertilized it yet and I also saw someone say I need to put rocks at the bottom of the planter because all I have soil wise is top soil and catus/succulent soil.
@ActualFantasy22 Nah, rocks on the bottom of the planter should be avoided! As far as the soil is concerned as long as the soil has a large amount of gritty mix which helps with drainage you should be good. For fertilizer, I use Schultz Cactus plus liquid plant food. I also only water with distilled water, because the water around this neck of the woods is horrible! And I water every 2 -3 weeks. Now with fall/winter approaching I‘ll be reducing it to about once a month.
@Ms.Persnickety march 15th of this year is when I got him at Walmart, I use my tap water, I used to water every month then I decided to get the free trail on here and I saw it says to water in 2 weeks and it needs fertilizer on the 17th. I take it outside to get nice warm sun but I bring it in every evening.
@ActualFantasy22 I would be careful as far as the watering schedule on this app is concerned, because it goes by the info you give it! It is always better not to rely too much on the app use you sense and what you see! Does the soil feel dry (cacti are very drought tolerant and need the soil to be completely dried out before you water again! The schedule this app gives you is a good guide but in the end you know much better what your plant needs.
