Hi there I desperately need help!!! I’ve had my #gardenia tree for like 6 months. I’m new to growing and I need help! It is in the window like a foot from the window. It does get about five or six hours of direct sunlight. I’ve been spraying the leaves with water and I watered it today and I watered it like a week ago as well I just put fertilizer in it a few days ago, but the leaves are wilting and drying up and kind of getting crackly. I’m embarrassed. I just don’t know what to do. #pleasehelp2newplantparents #pleasehelp #help
1ft to light, direct
12” pot with drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
@ShannonJohanna First of all don’t be embarrassed! Gardenias are divas with very specific vibes and tons of experienced plant parents have struggled with them too…From the pics and what you shared, sounds like your gardenia might be going through a combo of stress + sun shock + thirst confusion. Here’s the deal shannon
5–6 hours of direct sun is a lot, especially through glass it can dry them out fast. Gardenias prefer bright indirect light or mild morning sun and filtered light after.
Spraying the leaves is okay for humidity (they do love that), but the soil is what really matters gardenias are super picky about staying consistently moist but not soggy. Letting it dry out between waterings can stress them out.
And the fertilizer good idea, but if she was already stressed, it might’ve been a bit too much too soon. Here’s your Gardenia so for the Rescue Plan now
Move her just a bit back from the window bright indirect light or gentle morning sun is perfect, but 5–6 hours of full blast direct light indoors can get crispy real quick.
Check the soil 1–2 inches deep…if it’s dry, give her a slow, thorough drink (preferably with filtered or rainwater—she’s picky like that).
Gently remove any dead, crunchy, or fully wilted leaves….they’re just taking energy away from new growth now.
Pause on fertilizer for a bit…she needs a breather, not a boost, while she resets.
And if you can, bump up humidity nearby….gardenias love that spa life. You’ve already done the hardest part by noticing and asking for help. She can bounce back gardenias are stubborn, but so are you as a plant parent. You got this!!
