Plant keeping is both the best thing ever for me but it can also be pretty upsetting. I have 8 plants so far and 6 of the eight are thriving and growing splendidly, but two of them are pretty bad… my English Ivy and northern maidenhair fern. My English Ivy got a really bad spider mite infestation that killed most of the plant and honestly I don’t think it’ll make it, and my northern maidenhair fern had root mesh I had to remove that ended up causing quite a bit of root damage and frond loss. Luckily for the maidenhair fern, it’s decline stopped so there is hope for it to bounce back! However my English Ivy is a different story. It’s pretty upsetting because my English Ivy is one of my favorites. I moved it outside for more sun as a last resort and honestly if I see that it’s starting to completely die I may just cut some healthy-ish vines and try to propagate them. It does make me pretty sad though because even though both of these are from external issues out of my full control, it still kinda makes me feel like a bad plant parent. I guess all I can do is learn from the experience and apply this learnt knowledge to current and potential future plants (when I have space for more plants that is 😭🙏) #plantcare #plantdeath #RecoveringPlants
Learn from the mistakes is the best outlook to have. I’ve had my fair share of disasters, worst of which was I misread liquid fertilizer instructions and took out half my plants many years back. Hopefully propagating works, I’ve saved a couple of bonsai that way. It’s also good to have extra material around just in case something goes wrong.
@FamedGymealily thanks! That situation you had must’ve been tough. I too hope that propagation will save my Ivy.
I currently have 140+ plants that look like they’re thriving, but if you could see my plant graveyard, it would be much larger than most people’s entire collection! Plants teach us something whether they’re thriving or not- just thank the plant, compost it, and try again! I’ve learned along the way that some plants are not meant for me or my house -ferns and calatheas for example. It’s too dry. But there are lots of others out there!
@HappySelah25 thank you!!
@MamaLinne 140+ plants is a lot!!! Thank you for your words, I guess plant death is in fact sometimes just part of the process
@Nature_freak9 it is! Try not to be too hard on yourself. We’re all doing our best!
