Anise hyssop: a bee's sleepy haven

Sleeping Bee(auty) ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’–

The Anise Hyssop in my garden is popular with the pollinators.

The bees in particular find the flowers not just delicious but the perfect place to sleep. They lock their mandibles on to a petal and drift off...

I've never seen so many sleeping bees as I have in the last couple of weeks.

Bees experience the same sleep cycles as we do. The one I was watching tonight was definitely dreaming...and last night, this sleeping sweetheart was in deep sleep; he was right where I left him an hour after I first spotted him.

Gorgeous, eye-catching color but the bees all but ignore it. Landing on the flowers only if they're not paying attention or their landing aim was off ๐Ÿ™
I didnโ€™t know bees sleep. Thanks to you, Iโ€™m a little smarter about one of my favorite insect. I hope your oasis lives long and prosper.
@CorvidFan OMG I love our hyssop just because of the cute fuzzy bumble bees. I watched one grab a bloom and shove his little face in. I tried to get a photo but he was moving a little too enthusiasticly! ๐Ÿคฃ. This is our first year planting hyssop. Do you prune or deadhead it?
One of my favorite photos from our Botanic Gardens. I think he was drunk.
I saw 2 sleeping bumblebees on my garden phlox last night. Donโ€™t have a pic, am at work but will look for more sleeping bees when I get home. My phlox smell fantastic too.
@CorvidFan @Ada3 @Bunny413 OK I am home and here are sleeping bumblebees in the phlox and in the Joe Pye weed (a tall purple flower). Plus an unexpected tinier bug with pretty coloring that the bee got after, before it settled down.
@Bunny413 ha! You've described it perfectly, Samantha! The bees certainly seem to approach their job with great enthusiasm, seemingly whole body sniffing the flowers!

Such a great picture you posted! I'm finding the bees absolutely fascinating to watch. I was aiming for a hummingbird garden but I'm happy to have attracted so many pollinators, as well.

No deadheading of the hyssop so far. The blooms are lasting a long time! I was also thinking about saving seeds. I need to find out how to to it!
@AC73LoveCats great pictures, Jane! And I love the color of your phlox!
@CorvidFan Our hummingbirds actually like our hyssop, too. I love watching them zip around. Right now they are mostly juvenile fledglings and are so aggressive and silly.
