Hi! Yesterday I bought this beautiful Alocasia Macrorrhiza for a really good price, and I just wanted to show it to you and ask for some tips.

I noticed it had some white mealybugs and spider mites. Yesterday I cleaned the leaves with water, sprayed them with a nettle purin solution, and also removed some of the mealybugs using a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. After that, I sprayed the whole plant with the nettle mix.

When i bought it it was all wrapped in a net that i guess didn’t help her

I’d love to know if you have any tips! #HappyPlants #help #AlocasiaAddicts #Alocasia

@WittyTreemallow oh no, what a double whammy! You should be able to inspect any plant you bring home, look on top and under leaves, inspect all the stems/branches/petioles, and soil 😀 If it’s in some kind of netting, ask to inspect it because this is not good. People can’t be selling infested plants like this without having to show that it’s a healthy happy plant. Can you return this plant? Do you have any other plants? If so, isolate this one immediately.

mealy bugs and spider mites *dont* fly, but there are other pests that do, and I would be super cautious and paranoid that you might have another type of pest on this plant if you already have two kinds.

At this point you’re going to have to decide if this is worth the risk and the amount of time and labor involved for treatment.

Treatment for mites lasts 6 weeks (mealy bugs-3 weeks, but it’s the same spray so you can just do 6 weeks total) , and you’ll need to throughly spray this plant every 3 days within that time. If you miss a treatment day, you will have to restart the whole 6 weeks over again. Do you have access to pure neem oil and Castile soap? You will need this for the spray. If this plant was near other plants in your home you will also have to treat them. Spider mites can’t fly, but they can float on a breeze.

If you are determined to keep this plant I can share the treatment plan, but I would highly advise to get rid of this one, and search for a health alocasia instead. I’m sorry you’re having to go through this πŸ˜”
@DreamMachine hi!! Thanks for this!
I can’t return it, but it is fine. I’m keeping it for sure. I think we will be fine. It is in a corner of the living room opposite of all the rest of my plants. It does not have anything else that i’ve seen. It has a huge new leaf coming out πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ₯ΉπŸ’•πŸ’•. I inspect it everyday, every cm of the plant, and spray it with the nettle purin solution. I also have diatomaceous earth, and i can prepare a solution with that too
