Say hello to Sekka! He's a petrified cypress, or hinoki cypress. (Full botanical name: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Sekka')
Easily the best part of Sekka are those dense, scale-like leaves! I've never seen a wild one, only as bonsai. Its branches tend to grow long and straight, so frequent trimming is a must.
Growth has been great lately, all that bright light green foliage is fresh growth from being repotted earlier this year.
However, airflow inside wasn't ideal, and as you can see, the inner leaves died off. I cleaned those out and gave it a light trim. Good airflow is a vital part of keeping any tree healthy, big or small; it even helps keep pesky bugs away (in theory!).
Iβve got several more of these in various styles, that also need trimming and cleaning up. How about your trees and plants, howβs the growth? Anything needing pruning?

Oooh, I was just reading about hinoki π Iβm curious if you can detect the scent of them? And what interesting foliage!
Good airflow is such a must. My indoor plants have been much happier since I made sure there were fans in every room that has greenery in my home βΊοΈ

Wow almost a succulent huh? Crazy lookin foliage. pruning is artwork. I absolutely love it. οΏΌοΏΌ
and yes, everything almost currently needs a little pruning οΏΌexcept for the Bloodgoods have scorch & wind damage.
The young grafted cheapo trees annoying me but keep tellin myself itβs deciduous. Leave it alone 1st year then hack it π₯΅ would almost rather a stick in the ground possibly rooting then burnt crispy curled foliage omg they are absolutely killing me for not putting out new grow while everything else is aggressively thriving. οΏΌοΏΌ
But also makes you think I bet that clearance rack at your local box store screaming take me home for half price ! Save me!
Looking forward to a few new trees I have in transit now.

I can imagine as cheap as I got them. Theyβre going to be small, but thatβs OK. Canβt wait to see what they all look like.

Getting more and more into bonsai I just had 88ft roll of rubber coated wire come in day b4 yesterday οΏΌ$8 οΏΌοΏΌhave some βdug out the ground rocks from the ranch property in Kentucky Iβm hoping to start some βover the rock root formationsβ on these new trees.
Share some more examples of bonsai if you have some, Iβm all interested. οΏΌ

@DreamMachine when plucking out new growth there is a slight scent to them, not overpowering though.
Iβve got fans indoors as well, for a few spots. Luckily there is usually a good breeze blowing through my yard that keeps all the outdoor plants and trees happy.

@GracedStrapwort very nice collection! Crepe Myrtle is a favourite of mine. I had a miniature dwarf version, but the heat got it earlier this spring.
@OhGollyItsJolly did a lot of repotting this year, so letting everything grow wild β¦ resisting the urge to trim back has been hard.
This hinoki is a slooooooow grower, until you ignore it then suddenly itβs gone crazy.

@FamedGymealily if I have anything to suggest about crΓͺpe myrtles is get a white one. I say this because they are unkillable. I can show you some examples of one taking over a driveway cover that has been culvert growing through concrete . Has had a 20 pound bag of salt put on it 5 gallons of vinegar it will not die. οΏΌlol
@OhGollyItsJolly yup Iβve got a small one that Iβm working on. Itβs a pretty popular tree in my city here, lines from of the roads and a lot of people have them in their yards. Iβve got three at the moment.
