New Year New Growth
Happy New Year Everyone,
For those who have expressed interest in Aelius, my heliamphora, I wanted to share this fun observation. I can see when a new trap is growing before it emerges! There it is in silhouette inside the latest trap.
Aelius has finally found his happy place. All the old unhappy traps have been replaced with healthy new growth. As soon as a trap opens, reddens, and flattens a new one will appear just like this.
I remember reading these guys can be very slow growing but now that heβs established Iβm getting new traps every couple weeks. Maybe itβs just his active season?

@HeraMonstera taking a page of your googleβs black belt moves, I was able to find this ridiculously detailed article about Aelius πhttps://www.carnivorousplants.org/grow/guides/Heliamphora
@Prentyce heβs expecting! π
@HeraMonstera LIKE THE SEAHORSES π€©π₯Ήπβ¨π± nature is so cool!!
@Neatundertaker thank you!!!!!
@TheConservator he is an uncinata. He was cloned at Trapped Nursery in Roswell, GA by a grower named Andy Smith. π
@HeraMonstera ahh they can be hard to tell apart sometimes
@TheConservator I agree. If I didnβt buy this directly from the source I probably wouldnβt know.
@TheConservator no. I actually donβt do much of anything with it. I think Iβve fed it twice in the 7 months Iβve had it. I have it in a bog planter under a light panel. I usually have a siphon that feeds distilled water into the bog but it recently went dry and I havenβt set it back up. I also top water the moss when itβs looking dry, so the bog gets flooded every week or two.
@TheConservator that is really cool. Iβve never tried filling them. Itβs possible since your terrarium has really high walls that having it in sun over heated it. Itβs shocking how hot a terrarium can get inside even at mild air temps.
Wooo go Aelius!! He is doing so well since I last saw him! I'm so happy that he's even putting out a new pitcher. Super beautiful as well, goodness Heliamphora are really just breathtaking!
I recently got a Heliamphora myself (Heliamphora Minor) and I'm so nervous I'm gonna accidentally kill it. So far mines going strong, just had to really make sure that it wouldn't overheat haha.

@Merranda you will do great. Mine was a total impulse purchase that I went into complete blind. Aelius really hit his stride recently. I think the cooler temps might be helping. I upgraded the lights on my plant stand a few months ago, but heβs really popping off since the seasons changed.
