Bellina Hybridβs first spike
Summer Dance Queen x Miro Be Queen
Simultaneously spiking and growing a new leaf (bellinas do both and may sometimes stop and start one or the other).
Potted in glass with no drainage, just loose moss and a drainage layer of bark, lava rock, and I probably would have thrown some akadama in there as well.
Grow lights on a timer for 12 hours or so every day.
This seems to have cropped up in the past week, and Iβm pretty pleasantly surprised because while this is on a heating mat, the temps in this space have been 55-65 for the past 6 weeks or soβ¦ everything I ever read before getting Bellinas said they will pitch a fit in temps below 70, so itβs nice to see all of my Bellinas seem to be thriving with this setup (itβs been at least 6 months).

Well thats FUN @smushface I didnβt know they could do that!! π± I have been loving heating mats for keeping things at a stable temperature, that is awesome that it worked out well for this temp picky orchid π€
I also love the name π₯°

Congrats on the spike. I understand the temp worries. My bellinas and hybrids never really complained, and I have had them in the lower 60ies from time to time, so I think the 70 degree requirement seems exaggerated after all. It seems they can withstand those temps, at least for a while, without harm - except maybe that they probably won't bloom under those circumstances. But at least they don't immediately shrivel up and die and are still growing.
But yeah, with 55 I also would have looked for some help for them. The heat mat sounds like a great solution for that problem.
Enjoy your blooms. And leaves. They look gloriously glossy.

Update: she popped yesterday, and another bud is still growing. @DreamMachine @MusicalRedmint @PurelyTwisted
@smushface WOW. That bloom is something else. Like @MusicalRedmint I also appreciate the update, because that is phenomenal π² Does it have an easily described scent?
@DreamMachine it just popped open over the weekend so the fragrance is still developing (I also have the flu rn so my sense of smell may be diminished), but so far itβs starting to smell lemony (it is definitely supposed to be fragrant)
@smushface condolences for the flu. I just spent what seemed like a month under the weather, I hope it passes quickly for you. If you can detect a bit of fragrance now, Iβll bet itβs going to smell divine π₯°
