Good morn' to you all planty peeps! β˜€οΈ Let's talk about edible plants and gardening. πŸŒ±πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

First, check out this black Opal Basil plant! It smells sooo sweet & lovely, I can't wait to cook with some leaves. I see some pesto in my future!

I am also planning on harvesting some to sell at the farmers market in my town, along with any other produce we have extra of this year.

We have lots of greens planted like lettuce, arugula and kale. These are in raised beds. We've got herbs like more basil, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, lavender, and dill planted in some huge pots.
We also have a strawberry patch, blackberries, and mulberry trees. Not to mention the tomato & pepper plants we haven't planted yet. We have tried our hands at fruit trees; no luck there as of now..

Who else gardens as well as tends to their indoor plants? Favorite garden plant?
Best recipes to use basil in?

Oh, that Basil looks BEAUTIFUL! I need to boogie over to the farm supply place and grab some. My favorite is Thai Basil and I love to cook Thai Basil chicken! Mmmm!

Or maybe roll some fresh spring rolls with a big basil leaf in them! Or a big fluffy omlet with basil!!

Now I'm ready to cook!
@sarahsalith oh yuuuum those ALL sound good!! πŸ˜‹
Hey Jess! So we bought our current house in the Fall, so this is my 1st spring here and I’m excited to get started planting my raised beds. I’m hoping to get some cherry tomatoes going, as well as an herb gardenβ€”I LOVE cooking with fresh ingredients! I’m just getting the beds cleaned up and ready for planting, which I need to do asap. I’d like to try growing some veggies, but I’m not sure where to begin. I’ll probably just jump in as usual and hope for the best! 😁 I’d love to hear more about what you’re growing!
@LaSiguanaba
Sounds like you're well on your way to fresh produce! 😁

My husband & I are still very much beginner gardeners. We have been teaching ourselves & learning as we go. We have been gardening for about 8 years now-- mostly tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. Learn something new every year!! Recently our greens have been doing really well, and peas did really well last year. We have also tried beans and cucumbers which usually turn out well. We actually had a watermelon plant last year that was pollinated by the cucumbers next to it! It produced a fruit that looked like a tiny watermelon, but when you opened it, it smelled and looked like a cucumber!! Kinda tasted like a sweetish cucumber... I have pictures somewhere. Turns out, there are only very few watermelons that can cross with cucumbers and we unknowingly had one!!

This year, we are also doing some corn. And I would like to do a fall garden and have pumpkins and squash. I don't have any experience with these yet.
My favorite thing to do with basil is make pesto. I love pesto. The other thing I like to do with it is add lots to a tomato salad with fresh mozzarella,cukes ,Greek olives and romaine lettuce with lemon balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I could live on that. I also like to make a fresh tomato sauce with garlic ,lots of basil , salt & pepper and fennel seeds. My best home grown tomatoes. Put it all together in a cuisinart and blend. Pour it over fresh homemade pasta and eat ! No cooking just fresh sauce over hot pasta. We are also raised bed gardeners and grow blueberries, elderberries, medicinal herbs, culinary herbs and flowers and veggies. It’s what I live for. Last year was the worst year it rained all summer and by the end of the summer I lost a few big oaks that couldn’t stand up anymore. I hope we don’t have that weather this summer. Love , love , love , gardening season. I always had a few plants but this year I needed lots more to dispel my stress. I’m so happy I found this site filled with love and kindness and PLANTS ! The great thing is people bring me their plants that are sick now. It feels so good to save a plant and send it home to its mama! I mostly buy plants that are sick and take them home to rehabilitate them and because of all of you I’m getting better at it and you all help me. I sometimes buy healthy plants too. The thing I like best about having plants is the cat 🐈 loves to get in his cat tree and watch me take care of them. His cat tree is among all the plants and he thinks he lives in a jungle now. He likes it very much. He actually likes all the plants but doesn’t bother them. He is a character. My favorite garden plant is probably my miniature bleeding heart. It’s the cutest little thing ! What’s your favorite ? What is everyone’s favorite outdoor plant?
🌱πŸ€ͺπŸ™Œβ€οΈπŸ’•
@SportyWhiskfern
Wow you've got lots of outdoor garden action going on!! πŸ˜€
I love pesto and that lemon balsamic sounds delectable -- I have a thing for balsamic vinegar! πŸ˜‹
It has been raining here a lot so far this year. We will see what summer brings!
Honestly I think my favorite outdoor plant right now is this black opal basil. But I have lots of seeds still yet to come up so we will see if that changes! I also have a bronze scarlet canna I am excited to see bloom.
That sounds great! I know I love balsamic vinegar. I get mine at this little kitchen store that they make. They have all these huge stainless vinegar tanks with spigots. You can taste them all in a little paper cup. They have this Italian lemon balsamic that is aged .You used to be allowed to bottle your own but now they are bottled. That’s great you are already planting we are a little behind you. I can’t trust how the weather will be. I’ve lived in Maine for 50 years and the weather has changed so drastically. Has it there ?πŸŒ±πŸ™Œβ€οΈπŸ€ͺπŸ’•
@SportyWhiskfern Ah, yes, the weather the last few years has definitely been changing. It's been warmer. I am in north Western Missouri and we have been having so much RAIN, it's crazy. Some of my garden and plants are loving it though! Being in Maine and up north, I bet you gotta wait a bit to plant in case of a freeze.
Yeah it’s an even stranger year so far this year we’ve had spring like weather in - -between snow storms. It’s getting scary it’s hard to trust putting anything in the ground. I’m going to start adding some hoops to my raised beds I think this year. I’m seriously thinking about it. Hope your garden thrives this summer. Also need to learn about hydroponics may have to do all my gardening eventually indoors which would not be my favorite. If I was rich I’d have a big greenhouse and move in there. Lol ! Wouldn’t that be awesome!! πŸ€ͺπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸŒ±β€οΈπŸ’•πŸˆ
LOVEEE it! Everything gets basil when you grow it like I do πŸ˜† Definitely one of my favorites, I LOVE Opal Basil, Purple Basil, Red basil... lettuce leaf Basil.. all of them! My favorite last year was the lemon basil it was great in salads πŸ₯— I am nervous this year with expanding my outdoor gardens and having well over 65 indoor plants πŸ˜• I think I might have a problem πŸ˜† but my absolute favorite outdoor plant I've grown so far was the Kajari Melon. It smelled like heaven and tasted like a gift from there as well! So sweet. This one was almost ripe, they get more orange the more ripe they are!
@PlantBeach
Woah that kajari melon is really neat!! It looks delicious! Might have to look into growing some of those..
@JesssJungle Bakers Creek heirloom seeds! Or Marys Heirloom. I cannot waiittt for harvest this year.
