FUN FACT!
🌸 So many people mispronounce the names of plants (they can be hard to say sometimes)! Here are some that even you *thought* you were saying correctly!
• Peony: PEE-uh-nee
• Chrysanthemum: kruh-san-thuh-muhm
• Dahlia: day-lee-uh
• Iris: ai-ruhs
• Poinsettia: poyn-seh-tee-uh
• Monstera Deliciosa: mon-STAIR-uh del-liss-sea-OH-suh
• Pilea pepperomioides: pie-LEE-uh pep-per-row-me-OY-dees
• Dieffenbachia: diff-en-BACK-key-ah
🌸 Some of these have been mispronounced missing syllables or with completely different sounds. I found this very interesting. You might want to save this. #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #TheWateringHole

@maci.in.bloom I love that you took the time to do this but still won’t remember 🤣 And yep I have most of them in my collection.

@maci.in.bloom If a plant has a Latin name like a lot of Succulents do, I prefer to use the Latin pronunciation even though Americans might think it’s incorrect. I appreciate the info, Thank you!
@maci.in.bloom I love this!! 😍 I've got one for you! Kalancho - kal-un-KOH-ee I had no idea that I was saying it wrong my whole life. I've always pronounced it kuh-LAN-choh and no matter how hard I try I can't pronounce it the correct way 😂
@princesspitstop seriously Ka-lun-CO-ee !! I’ve been saying it wrong my entire life too!!!!!! 🙉🙉🙉🙉
@maci.in.bloom @princesspitstop for years I thought it was PAAH-thos. Then during Covid everyone is saying poh-thos 😵💫 with no emphasis on either syllable . Maybe it was a local thing cause everyone I knew back east said PAAH-thos. But we also pahked ahh cahhs 😆 🤪 (parked our cars)
@MariansOasis In Hah-vud Yahd?😂 I say PAAH-thos too lol
@Ms.Persnickety I didn’t even think of that! Yes, those are especially hard to say!
@MariansOasis Ha! Love that!
@ILoveMyPlants Hilarious! 😂 Oo! Lovely!
I'm trying to imagine how someone could possibly mispronounce Iris or Dahlia 😂
I've always heard Dieffenbachia pronounced "Diff-en-BAWK-ee-ya". Pronouncing "BAWK" like "BACK" makes it sound very midwestern to me lol. Regional dialects definitely play a role in how many of these are pronounced, and in that sense I suppose there isn't really a "right" or "wrong" way to say them 🤓
@MariansOasis @princesspitstop
Kalanchoe was the first one that came to my mind! 😜 Dracaena is another one frequently mispronounced (druh-SEE-nuh, not dray-SEE-nuh), along with Aglaonema (ag-lee-oh-NEE-ma, not ag-lay-oh-NEE-ma), crassula (KRASS-yoo-la, not krass-YOO-la), and Nanouk (na-NOOK, where "nook" is pronounced like nook in "nooks and crannies", as opposed to NAN-ook or NAN-uck) 😛

@stephongreg The first time I heard someone online pronounce Kalancho "wrong" I had to rewind the video. Like how do you get "coey" out of "cho"? hahaha It's so absurd I can't even. 😂
@princesspitstop I’m pretty sure that’s not the Southern pronunciation !
..... I thought that was how everybody pronounced all of those 🫣🫣🫣😂 With the exception of Dahlia, anyway. I know day-lee-uh is technically an accepted pronunciation but I never hear ANYONE say it that way, it's always doll-lee-uh. I mean, they were named after Anders Dahl, sooooooo yeah, I'mma go with the Swedish pronunciation on that one LOL
@RefinedSandwort HAHAHA! You're right!! 👍💯
@stephongreg I’m in the Midwest, too (go, Green Bay packers!)
@princesspitstop lol you know the end!! 😆😆😆. Did you grow up back east? I did. And when I moved to TX I quickly lost my Yankee accent. No more caw-fee ☕️. No more dawg 🐕
@stephongreg NAN-uck really?? 😝
@SpyderLily it’s DOLL-yah to me. Can’t even attempt to say it any other way lol🤭🫣. Always goes to DOLL-yah
Fun post Maci @maci.in.bloom
@MariansOasis 🤣 I lived in South Carolina for 7 years and when we went to Boston we learned some of the slang. You know like wicked pissa and how to say I found my car keys. "My khaki's 🗝️ were in the pocket of my khakis"
