FUN FACT!
πΈ So many people mispronounce the names of plants (they can be hard to say sometimes)! Here are some that even you *thought* you were saying correctly!
β’ Peony: PEE-uh-nee
β’ Chrysanthemum: kruh-san-thuh-muhm
β’ Dahlia: day-lee-uh
β’ Iris: ai-ruhs
β’ Poinsettia: poyn-seh-tee-uh
β’ Monstera Deliciosa: mon-STAIR-uh del-liss-sea-OH-suh
β’ Pilea pepperomioides: pie-LEE-uh pep-per-row-me-OY-dees
β’ Dieffenbachia: diff-en-BACK-key-ahοΏΌοΏΌοΏΌ
πΈ Some of these have been mispronounced missing syllables or with completely different sounds. I found this very interesting. You might want to save this. #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #TheWateringHole

@maci.in.bloom If a plant has a Latin name like a lot of Succulents do, I prefer to use the Latin pronunciation even though Americans might think itβs incorrect. I appreciate the info, Thank you!
@maci.in.bloom I love this!! π I've got one for you! Kalancho - kal-un-KOH-ee I had no idea that I was saying it wrong my whole life. I've always pronounced it kuh-LAN-choh and no matter how hard I try I can't pronounce it the correct way π
@princesspitstop seriously Ka-lun-CO-ee !! Iβve been saying it wrong my entire life too!!!!!! ππππ
@maci.in.bloom @princesspitstop for years I thought it was PAAH-thos. Then during Covid everyone is saying poh-thos π΅βπ« with no emphasis on either syllable . Maybe it was a local thing cause everyone I knew back east said PAAH-thos. But we also pahked ahh cahhs π π€ͺ (parked our cars)
@maci.in.bloom I love that you took the time to do this but still wonβt remember π€£ And yep I have most of them in my collection.
@MariansOasis In Hah-vud Yahd?π I say PAAH-thos too lol
@Ms.Persnickety I didnβt even think of that! Yes, those are especially hard to say!
@MariansOasis Ha! Love that!
@ILoveMyPlants Hilarious! π Oo! Lovely!
I'm trying to imagine how someone could possibly mispronounce Iris or Dahlia π
I've always heard Dieffenbachia pronounced "Diff-en-BAWK-ee-ya". Pronouncing "BAWK" like "BACK" makes it sound very midwestern to me lol. Regional dialects definitely play a role in how many of these are pronounced, and in that sense I suppose there isn't really a "right" or "wrong" way to say them π€
@MariansOasis @princesspitstop
Kalanchoe was the first one that came to my mind! π Dracaena is another one frequently mispronounced (druh-SEE-nuh, not dray-SEE-nuh), along with Aglaonema (ag-lee-oh-NEE-ma, not ag-lay-oh-NEE-ma), crassula (KRASS-yoo-la, not krass-YOO-la), and Nanouk (na-NOOK, where "nook" is pronounced like nook in "nooks and crannies", as opposed to NAN-ook or NAN-uck) π

@stephongreg The first time I heard someone online pronounce Kalancho "wrong" I had to rewind the video. Like how do you get "coey" out of "cho"? hahaha It's so absurd I can't even. π
