New plant baby πŸ₯Ή

Thanks #GregPlantShop for this ABSOLUELY STUNNING calathea! I’ve been too afraid to get one but always wanted one. I’m a sucker for the green-red plants lol.

I felt ready to accept the challenge of having a calathea and my gosh I probably won’t, but, I hope I can keep her as stunning as she arrived, I thought it was a fake plant at first! πŸ˜‚

I know these guys can be totally befuddling but if you have any solid tips, let me know!! 😍

She’s in our kitchen/dining room window for now!

Yay!! Congratulations @Stephazar πŸ™Œ I have over 20 different types, and @MockingJay does too if you ever have a question ☺️

Calatheas have a bad rap, but don’t let it scare you! I find them to be quite laid back but also extremely β€˜vocal’ about their preferences. Which, I prefer. I’d rather know if something wasn’t quite loved right away you know?

They live mostly in the understory and rainforest floors, getting dappled sunlight, so no full direct sun all day for them. They like it quite humid, and they love water, but this makes it easy to get root rot if you don’t have the proper substrate for them. All of mine are in a chunky mix of 1/3 coir, 1/3 orchid bark, and 1/3 perlite. Since I’m in the PNW, (wet and humid predominately) I let mine dry out almost all the way, usually 95% before I water again.

They are susceptible to fungal infections on their leaves, so I usually give mine a spray and wash right away with a mixture of 1Tb peppermint Castile soap and 32oz water. Just sprayed all over everything, leaves top and bottoms, petioles, stems until it’s dripping, and gentle shake to get the drips off, and let air dry.

Congrats again! She’s stunning! I have found my makoyana to be one of the most chill and unfussy calatheas of my entire collection πŸ₯°
Oh and they’re extra sensitive to the chemicals in tap water! Rainwater or distilled only is best, or at least filtered tap! πŸ’¦ 🚿
@Stephazar oh I loove the Calatheas πŸ₯° One thing that I love about them is that they look fake but aren't, contrary to the fake plants that try to look real🀣🌱 (only me that find that funny?πŸ‘€).

Also they are so expressive! Moving their leaves up and down during the day when they are happy😊

My first Calathea was also a Makoyana! The one that made me fall in love with the whole genus😊 (also my easiest one). It tricked me into getting another one that looked quite similar, the Pinstripe, but oh my gosh the drama on that one🀣 Almost scared me into quitting the whole thing. Untill I got a White Fusion, which is reportedly one of the fussiest ones, but was an angel compared to the PinstripeπŸ™ˆ From then on it was no going backπŸ˜… (And now after 3 years the Pinstripe is finally also thriving, it just had a few years tantrumπŸ™ˆ).

You got good advice from @DreamMachine, just let us know if you need any help or have any questions😊 (and we will probably drop everything going down the rabbit-hole to find any solution πŸ˜† #adhdplantlovers)
@MockingJay lolllll TRUE πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ #adhdplantlovers

And, coincidentally, my Pinstripe is ALSO the most fussy. 🀯 You know what this means, right? I must needs get a White Fusion πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜
@Stephazar @DreamMachine @MockingJay

This must be related to the Rattlesnake plant?

They look SO similar 😍

Congrats on the beautiful new addition to your plant family!
@CutePolypremum it sure is Joanie! They are totally relatives ☺️
@DreamMachine

That's the coolest thing ever! 😎😍
