Soooo are these plants always dramatic?!? Why does one leaf die when a new one grows? Also this plant attracts a lot of gnats (seen on the yellow sticky)
@Plantlo mine is super finicky too! Iβve finally found a spot in my house where it produces more than 1-2 leaves at a time. But it took a while for me to find the sweet spot.
Iβve never had a problem with gnats for this plant. Might want to change the soil?? I know the last time I had gnats I had to change the soil in about 7 pots before they died down.
Good luck with yours! I hope it decides to love you and grow a bunch of new leaves.

These guys are genuinely dramatic. So, your glazed pot retains more moisture and restricts air circulation, which is likely why you have so many gnats. Being a variegated version makes these plants more challenging due to the color breakdown. If your leaves arenβt showing much variegation, check your lighting for bright indirect sunlight. They are accustomed to jungle floors, so they prefer higher humidity and well-draining soils. They belong to the Alocasia family, and aroids in general are quite finicky, but you can still get more out of them. Iβd recommend checking your soil and ensuring it doesnβt have too much water in the pot. You can also add lava rocks to the tray to create a tropical atmosphere. ππ©΅π«Άπ»π»π I have quite a few Alocasia and taro plants, so if I can assist you in any way, please let me know. For reference, hereβs one of mine that Iβve grown from a corm; she currently has about 5-6 leaves. The picture shows a slightly fewer number, but I recently transplanted her into a new soil mix. π You can also water with a diluted solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. This will help with the gnats, but please check the internet for the appropriate amounts based on your pot size and other factors. Also, in the growing season (so now), they will require and want a little more fertilizer (plant food) to boost them up.
@Idplantthat the lava rocks , do I put them in the water tray? I have some! Your plants are so beautiful
@IWantThatPlant omg thank you! Yeaaa these pots are old too, so many itβs time to go shopping lol what kind of pot is best?
@Plantlo I have two and one is directly in the pot that is unglazed on the inside, and glazed on the outside; the other is in a clear nursery pot inside a pot.
@Plantlo thank you! Yup, so if you put them in your water tray π¦, then put your planter on top of the lava rocks. With a little water in the tray but not enough if it affects the roots; I hope that makes sense. Also, a side note with aroids; watering with tap water will create a salt build-up in your soil; so make sure you are flushing your plants every couple of months; if you can and arenβt doing this already, use distilled or rainwater for them, they will be a lot better with that. Also, just know that watering around the plant so your roots grow to the sides makes it easier for the plant to absorb when needed instead of when just watered. (Again, I hope Iβm making sense) π€£
What type of potting soil do you use? Some of the big brands are known for having lotssss of gnat eggs in them. I keep my alos in a very chunky mix so they donβt stay too wet. Maybe try that? Alos are also heavy feeders. I fertilize mine with about 1/4 strength with each watering. It took about a year of doing that consistently, but itβs finally not dropping a leaf with each new one!
@MamaLinne shut the front door πͺ! Potting mixes sell gnatsβ egg mixes. π±
