Hello plant peoples! 🪴🌺😁 I mentioned my Birkin several months ago, the new leaves would start turning brown just as they started opening. Well, I have tried everything I can think of, nothing has stopped it! The older leaves are beautiful and having no issues at all but EVERY SINGLE NEW LEAF starts well it looks like it’s rotting to be honest- here is a pic of a couple I just clipped off. I don’t know what to do. Any ideas are welcome! I have a baby Pink Birkin that is doing great right now and I don’t want it to have the same issue. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on the matter! Here are some pics - the first one I took to show how many have turned brown one after the other, u can see the empty stalk! Sigh. My birkin has been a rough one for me too. It just struggles to thrive! I’ve restarted it twice. I put it in a naked root pot and really let it dry completely out between waterings, and it’s getting great sunlight in an indirect window. It’s finally acting like mayyyybe it has the will to live. I think they like a lot of light.
@Ponytailmom @MamaLinne ugh, same over here ✋ At this point I feel like it’s an inherent flaw with the cultivar. The ONLY thing that seems to work somewhat, is to put mine directly, like 6”, under a Sansi 10W bulb. At this point I’m asking myself if he’s worth it… I have a feeling I’m going to sell him soon 🤷♀️
@MamaLinne @DreamMachine I do feel like it stays too wet, even if I wait what seems like forever since I watered it. It never seems to get dry! I think I will repot her and move it to a different location and see what happens. I’m sorry you lovely ladies are having Birkin issues as well. @Ponytailmom Yes, this can be fixed, but the damaged leaves will not turn green again. When only new growth on a Philodendron Birkin turns brown while older leaves stay healthy, it usually points to root stress from overwatering, severe dry air (low humidity), or ultra-white new leaves lacking chlorophyll dying off. Common Causes & FixesRoot Stress or Overwatering: Soggy soil damages delicate new roots, preventing the fresh growth from getting nutrients. Fix: Let the top 2 inches of soil dry out before watering again, and ensure the pot has a drainage hole.Lack of Humidity: New emerging leaves are tender and easily crisp in dry indoor air. Fix: Group plants together or place a small humidifier nearby.Excessively White Leaves: Birkins often throw all-white leaves with no green pigment; these cannot process light and naturally turn brown and die. Fix: This is normal genetics, but giving the plant brighter indirect light can encourage healthier, more balanced variegation.
@Ponytailmom @DreamMachine @MamaLinne @Idplantthat I have two Birkins both were growing in with a red Congo. I wanted to separate them, but the roots were very intertwined. I ended up chopping both Birkins and rooting them in water, which they eventually did, but it took months. And the roots were the funkiest I’ve ever seen! So I put the smaller one in a mixture of reg soil and succulent soil. I’m getting new growth on that one. The other bigger one is in regular soil that I mixed with some airier Hoya (maybe 🤷♀️) mix. They’re both doing “okay”. Super slow to grow any new leaves. The smaller one in succulent mix actually has more new growth but I can’t say that perhaps it wasn’t as traumatized as the larger one. So my impression is they’re very slow to recover from change. Why your new leaves @Ponytailmom are browning is weird. I’m sure you’ve checked your soil and roots. If soil & roots are fine I’d be tempted to just leave it alone for the rest of the warm weather and see what happens. Might be time to replace 🤷♀️. TBH I’m surprised mine didn’t croak 🐸
@MariansOasis @Ponytailmom, that’s crazy! So succulent soil for the Birkin seems to be a better choice. I knew philodendrons preferred a little more acidity, but I didn’t think of succulent soil. I have a pink and a white Birkin, and honestly, it’s so weird—my pink is doing so much better than my white. @MariansOasis, I have a plant that I know is a philodendron, but as to what variety, I’m not sure. 🤔 I’m saying this because mine also has the same stripes growing in, and my AI said it’s some sort of "apple something"?? Have you guys ever heard of an apple something philodendron? (Think it’s called an apple Congo? Or caramel apple 🍎 philodendron?) I’m usually not this stumped 🤔 but with all these newer hybrids, I feel like I’m just tripping over the roots and tangling myself up without even thinking about it! 🤷♀️🤦♀️
@Idplantthat I haven’t heard of it so I Googled and it shows an upright one ‘Congo Apple’ sometimes called Prismacolor Congo Apple. And a rare climbing philo ‘Caramel Apple’ with bronze/red hues. Also a neon-chartreuse philo ‘Golden Apple’.

I've been on hiatus but saw your post and had to answer.
My Birken did the exact same thing!
It was due to too much light.
I had him about 6" away from my Sansi grow light.
When I moved him about 4.5 feet lower, under my Chirpy grow light, Birken is happier than ever!
Cut off those rotten leaves and make sure to sterilize the scissors after.
Let almost completely dry out between waterings and only use deep, pure well water, rain, or distilled. Never use tap water... 🤗😍

It's overwatering the white leaves are extremely picky about that. I make sure mine is totally 100% dry between watering and I never had the issue again.
That new growth needs tons of oxygen and plenty of water to develop. Although it has water in the soil those roots can't take on enough to send upward when those leaves are developing.
So don't be afraid to let those Birkins go dry, I promise they do better that way.
