Incredibly they are selling them as "phalaenopsis orchid". On the price label and even on the big plastic wrapping itself. I will be writing a strongly worded email. Imagine, someone buying those and plunking them in a shaded corner... cause... phalaenopsisπ€¦ββοΈ. At home I repotted and saw in tiny print on the pot the label "odontoglossum" so at least we are in the right family now, but it's the same on each and every pot. And I saw some miltonias as well and the one I bought, clearly is a brassia. They still can have differences in care I think. Why mislabel them on the outside and on the inside (where you do not see it, unless you already know something is off and are looking) use a not very specific term? That is not okay. π€¬
@ILoveMyPlants Deb, didn't we just talk about availability of something like this in e.g. a bigger grocery store? Provided, I didn't take any thrips with me, which I slightly suspect π¬) I feel I just hit a jackpot. 6 euros each. I don't know what the exchange rate is, but that price is ludicrous
@MusicalRedmint Current exchange rate makes those around $6.50 US. That is insane!
@UltraKoreanfir
Yep. I forgot to take photos in there, but it was ridiculous. I do not like miltonias, but there were some with blooms as big as the palm of my hand, that made me almost reconsider my position on them.
Most of them were worse for wear though. Placed on the bottom shelf, in wobbly pots, in a cold draughty spot, maybe not mindful people picking them up and toppling them. And pest damage. Mostly, my guess would be thrips, some blooms were completely destroyed. That is also the reason why I immediately repotted. And sprayed. Outside (and it's relatively cold today).
Let's see, how much I damaged the buds roots and flowers with that. And if in a week you can hear me whining about thrips additionally to my mite problem. π€¦ββοΈ

@MusicalRedmint Aldi ! orchids !! Will wonders never cease!!! I am such a fan of Aldi and couldnβt wait for them to land here. They do have some great gardening product so I have a great plant stand thanks to Aldi.
I mentioned it elsewhere but a local wholesale supplier who sells plants manages 80 000 orchids a month! So I can only wonder how many orchids Aldi will end up selling. I see orchids in nearly every supermarket sitting near the entrances waiting for the unsuspecting shopper! I so need to move away from orchids as they are a dominant species for me or were. Thanks for sharing Susann. I remember there was also a German company that had roadside shops with a similar name to Aldi, something like Ildi or something similar ?!?

@Seymour Lidl. Lidl and are known for their turf wars. If I remember correctly, when lisle first started out (or started to expand like crazy), there is the story that they never bothered to do market research and plopped a store, wherever there was already and Aldi. Urban myth? I don't know, but it somehow stuck with me. I think Lidl has even outpaced Aldi abroad. I think it's known everywhere
@TheOddAsity thank you π I wish I could capture the gorgeous red of the last one. In the picture is is lighter colored. But I'm reality it looks like dark red velvet
@MusicalRedmint Lidl! Thatβs the one although I donβt believe they have hit Australia as yet and may not ! But I think I even saw them in Italy and maybe even Spain many moons ago π π
@Seymour
Yes they seem to be big in Europe. I remember when I was on a school exchange in Greece (waaaaaaaaaay back) I was confused to see it there. And as such a staple too. It was very jarring, since at that time it just did not belong there in my mind.

@Chevysgirl11 I already threw away those horrendous bags, otherwise I would show you. They are clearly labeled as such. I am still annoyed. It all began when my mother told me: look, they have special orchids at aldi today (photo attached) and on my question what the tag said, she showed the bag. (She knows better, but still did not know what it was, she bought basically, just sent the photo and a smiley). How that is not scamming the customer in some way, I don't know. I know they are gorgeous and cheap, but how many will try to take good care of them and fail because of that?
@Chevysgirl11
In that regard, I have to at least defend the supplier. Apart from possible pests, they were top notch. The roots are a sight to behold on all of them.
But I guess, I got them a few hours, a day max, after they arrived. Given what I saw and what would probably constitute care at the store, they would decline fast in there.
Might here as well, after what my pest phobic self put them through upon arrival.

@clairsheart I agree. Even more so considering where I found it π
@QuietThujopsis hi, Madeleine, thank you, yes, the pseudobulbs are unmistakable on a closer look. Which is why I am so peeved about the mislabeling. I have already talked to some people helping me out with the specific ID, since I couldn't go the last step on them alone. I am not sure about the specific hybrids they came up with, so I won't post them, but more generally those plants should be (from left to right) an Odontioda, a Brassia (or Brassidium if that better suits your fancy) and an Oncidopsis. Gotta love those naming mixes in the oncidium family.
