#TheKitchenwindow @dreammachine cup of dirt. Bc never let a citrus seed go unplanted they almost always germinate when fresh.
Something to take note it’s a small tree from seed just bc it’s only 4” tall doesn’t mean it’s tap root isn’t as long as your arm? 🤯 maybe a little exaggeration there but as you see plant is very small root is 2-3 times longer then the tree tall. Wrapped in a circle. I don’t necessarily think it’s rootbound but perfect time for an uppotting & possibly a tap root chop depending if it has decent feeder roots probably a little early but & I always use a dash of mycohorrizae directly to the roots to help prevent transplant shock & get them feeder roots stretching #PlantAddict #citrus will update after uppot. Don’t forget to join #TheKitchenwindow if your kitchen window grows plants for you. I know I ain’t the only one letting the dishes have all the fun
@OhGollyItsJolly NOICE!! 🙌 and yes, I totally believe the tap root could be that long. Do you keep your citrus in pots? Or are you lucky enough to be able to plant in ground? (I cannot 😔) hahaha, I have that same myco innoculant 👍
@DreamMachine I believe I could plant my citrus in the ground, but I have not bc of cost to replace them & they’ve grown quite a bit. And there would be some steps to make it possible like putting on incandescent Christmas lights and having a black water barrel next to them in a sunny location and just for one frost to possibly ruin them. I just really can’t let that happen and when you first walk into the door of the sunroom and there’s like half a dozen citrus blooming right there it just straight smacks you in the face with awesomeness. So as of now, they are all in pots to be specific better Home and garden whiskey barrels except for the two most recent that came in a 5-7gallon nursery pot. Have a strategy or at least a final goal. I start off with the $10 and then I go to the 1250 and then I get the $15.00 three different size whiskey barrels from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart and they are thick very nice I drill holes around each ring on the pots every 1” on bottom ring & every 2” on middle ring. For better air to the roots. each size for the first second and third and continuous years. Of growing. It will be quite hard to move after that. & i lightly top dress “roughly a cup” with down to earth organic fertilizer, 2 cups of earthworm casting & water in with airated fish fertilizer tea 511 monthly so comes out to 11-4-4 roughly + the castings = citrus that love you back so much fruit going to have to pull the half on the end of branches off so they don’t break. Had to pull 3 premature limes today. To encourage bigger other fruits & new growth in those areas. There’s still 10 limes left on it. Middle picture is the nagami kumquat. covered in blooms & fruit. I should probably pull at least 50 off of it now.
if I had to suggest yes, get some citrus if they say it can’t handle freezing temperatures just put it in the garage in a pot as long as they don’t get blasted with frost, they will be fine. Almost guarantee you will not be able to eat all the fruit off of one plant alone. Typically my first year having a new citrus tree I pull all blooms and fruit off of it if it’s from a nursery “grafted” to encourage all out healthy strong growth then top the shoots 6months in. By the 2nd year you’ll be done impressed yourself. Even with growing experience, citrus trees are that fun Imo. Sorry for such a long reply. I love the smell of citrus. Leave you with a fun fact. Limonene is so bioavailable you absorb over 80% of it just from simply smelling it. And it has been proven to make your mind think that you feel better which has also been proven that your mind makes you physically feel better bc it already thinks you do. 😇
