Found a zz plant at Walmart and thought I’d give it a try! Is different from my other plants but I like this one, she’s cute (: #ZzPlant #PlantHaul #NewPlants
6ft to light, indirect
5” pot with drainage
Last watered 1 week ago
@Nature_freak9 Beautiful! You'll love it! It's such an easy plant I forget I have one lol
@princesspitstop good to know! I think it’ll be a nice change from my other higher maintenance plants lol
@Nature_freak9 Definitely! I don't think I would have it in a self watering pot though. I just noticed that it was in one. They have rhizomes in the soil that look like little potatoes that store water so they don't need to be watered as often and actually prefer their soil to dry out completely before giving them water. You can still keep it in that pot just don't fill the reservoir up. 😊
@princesspitstop yeah whenever a plant comes in a self watering pot I usually don’t use it as it’s intended lol! I remove the inner pot and just water them like normal and use the self watering pot for cosmetic reasons. Thanks for the tip!
@Nature_freak9 Sorry, I wasn't sure if you knew πŸ™‚ I don't even know why they put plants in them that aren't meant to be to begin with. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's like they're setting people up who aren't aware for failure. 😞 It's still a nice pot though!!!
@princesspitstop no worries at all! I think it’s honestly just because a lot of big box retailers aren’t fully knowledgeable on the plants they sell (since they get the plants from big brand nurseries, and they’re simply just the sellers) so they just assume that self watering pots are good for all plants
@Nature_freak9 Your probably right. That makes sense. ☺️ Have a good night!
I have one and love it. Grows very fast .
You can neglect the crap out of it, they are super hard to kill if you forget to water and they don’t need much light.

The self-watering pot is fine (plenty of plant-specific retailers like EasyPlant sell it this way)… the capillary action of these pots is quite slow, you just need to wait to water it until the water chamber is totally dried out (and this plant will be fine if you forget it for a while after it has dried out).

If you do remove it from that self-watering pot and top-water it (not sure why a person would want less convenience), consider changing the soil because the medium blend in the self-watering pot may be too absorbent for top watering β€” it was chosen for use with the slow distribution of water you get from a self-watering pot.
@smushface good to know Thanks!!!
