Let’s celebrate the end of summer dormancy! (Some reposts) #fromseed #NewGrowth #FloweringPlants #HappyPlants #SucculentSquad #SucculentLove #Autumn #fall #NewLeafAlert
@stephonicle there’s an orchid in there that’s not from seed, and the cyclamen was also a gift…but it’s been multiplying like crazy from its little tubers so I’m counting it 😂
@CordialWildyam hey, it counts 😜 Love how your string of bananas is all over the place and that owl planter is 🤌
@thenonnon flowers AND leaves!
@thenonnon wonderful bloom! I think cactuses may be next spring’s adventure for me
@Catplantaddict they’re weird wonderful little dudes and dudettes
Wow how beautiful these are ! I have few succulents myself that prefer the cooler temps rather then summer. My alico hearts that goes dormant when it gets too hot. It took me a while to learn about these things, and makes you feel better when they slow their growing (and it’s not something I did to stunt growth, it’s absolutely normal), some even will bloom!
@TidyTigerpear exactly, I never knew about summer vs winter dormancy amongst succulents until a few months ago! Besides Aeoniums, I have a bunch of Crassula, Kalanchoe, Haworthia/Haworthiopsis, Sedum, and many others that are just entering into their growing season 😛
@stephonicle it’s hard to remember which ones are which sometimes ! lol
@stephonicle I would have some that go dormant during the summer outside, and once it got HOT they stopped growing and I couldn’t figure out what was up, but I finally realized what was going on once I realized they were just dormant from the heat.
@TidyTigerpear Found this chart on a plant subreddit. I printed and laminated it, hung it near my plant station lol
@stephonicle that’s awesome !! Thank you!
@stephonicle some of the ones from winter growers side suprosed me. I kept mine in full summer fo summer like, sedeveria, graptoveria and graptopetalum . These all did so well for me when they have full sun, and i struggle keeping them alive during the winter due to lack of Light. I always that those were summer growers and went dormant in winter ?
@stephonicle I do know about Aeonium and Andromischus though
@TidyTigerpear I was surprised too! Especially the echeveria hybrids like sedeveria and graptoveria. Maybe they're included because sedum and graptopetalum are considered summer dormant, which takes precedence over the echeveria in their DNA..? No idea lol 🤷🏻♀️
@stephonicle weird, my peperomia is a Spring grower 🤔😲
@TidyTigerpear love your succulent corner, thanks for sharing!
@stephonicle aw heck, I may keep that just for the list of genuses I need to collect!
@CordialWildyam I know some CPs like certain sundews have a summer dormancy but didn’t appreciate the wide range of other plants. But it makes sense that certain desert 🏜️ like conditions suggest it is better to “wake up” over the cooler winter months! Thanks for the post, Jason ! 😀👍
@BabeVila well the short answer is…I don’t know! Five years ago I grew a tray of large and small mixed succulent seeds from cactusstore.com - it looks and acts like a tiny aeonium but it’s been a long time since I tried to ID it
@BabeVila as for growing them from seed, ask away! But my advice is pretty simple: they’re usually inexpensive and germination rates are low, so just sow more than you need and keep the best. Use a gritty starter mix (an off the shelf seed starter mix and add say 50-60% coarse sand). And then my rule of thumb is to treat succulent seedlings like any other seeds until they start to look like the plant they’re supposed to be, maybe 6-12 months later. Then I start looking up the real care information and repot the survivors
@CordialWildyam awesome thank you for the tips! I’ve been having a great time propagating succulents from leaves but I’m considering trying seeds. Your plants are all stunning 😍
@BabeVila haha, they’re “instagram happy” - I usually don’t post them when they’re being little dopes
