Splitting desert candle cactus: need advice

Hello everyone. This euphorbia acrurensis has 4 trunks that I assume are growing out from one root ball. I want to split them into four individual plants. My question is would splitting the root ball or just cutting trunks at soil level work best? All of it would be new experience for me. Maybe i should try both approaches. Thx for your input.
(p.s., tips on soil would also be useful)
0ft to light, direct
8” pot with drainage
Last watered 3 years ago
splitting the root ball would be easier on the plants because then none of them are starting at zero roots as they would with a cutting.

That said, both methods would work.
I know you can propagated from stems. I know you can take a sharp, clean knife and cut a stem with a root system (sounds like the best way, in my opinion).

HOWEVER. I've killed this before so I might not be the best person from whom to take advice. I desperately want a larger plant one day. Perhaps I should go big or go home and not mess with the smaller plants.
Thanks for the feedback Drew. That makes good sense to me.
Lol πŸ˜‚ I get your sentiment. I also fear Spikely may end up in my plant graveyard if I don’t have a solid how-to plan! Thx.
