Just bought this from Costa Farms through Amazon. It looks sad. Is it dead already in arrival and if not, what should I do? I got it because I needed a plant for a low light spot in my entryway. Thanks!!
4ft to light, indirect
13” pot without drainage
Last watered 3 months ago
@ElegantBushlily I’m guessing you mean the Bird Of Paradise in your oasis? You’ll want to add some pics here in your post too πŸ‘πŸ»
@ElegantBushlily The picture isn’t super clear, but it looks it may have had some cold damage. The dying leaves won’t recover, but you’ll likely get new growth eventually. I’d pursue a refund myself.
@debbiedo just edited.. new here sorry
@ElegantBushlily No worries! Adding pics definitely helps. Adding some hashtags Will also get more eyes on it πŸ‘πŸ» #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #BirdOfParadise #PlantMail #TheWateringHole
@debbiedo thanks! Will do
I agree with the above, it's cold damage. Anything under 50 degrees does damage to a bird of paradise. I will list what you can do to get her back on her feet.

1. Contact seller for a refund. But I would still try to save the one you have.

2. Place her somewhere on an interior wall with stable temperatures.

3. DO NOT prune. Wait on this because even though the leaves are damaged they can still get energy from them. Only cut them if they turn black or mushy for now. Eventually when she gets new growth you can prune her.

3. Water sparingly. She is shocked right now. A plant in shock does not drink very much. Therefore, they are prone to root rot.

4. After you have moved her to a stable spot try to ignore her. Don't make changes to her environment, move her around or anything. Because that adds more shock and extends the recovery process.

5. DO NOT fertilize. Fertilizer will burn her roots.

6. Be PATIENT, it can take weeks sometimes even months before you see new growth.

I keep a plant ICU in my bedroom where I don't see them as often for things like this. It makes it easier for me to ignore them.

She will recover as long as the roots did not freeze for an extended time. They can look totally dead and still come back.

Plus, it's rewarding to bring them back. You also learn a lot from the process. 🩷

Keep me posted on her recovery!
@debbiedo Thanks for the tag Debbie 🩷
I forgot if it is the Bird of Paradise it is in no way a low light plant. Temporarily she is fine with low light. But she will really struggle in low light. I'm sorry. 😒

Low light plants would be any kind of prayer plant, calatheas do pretty good. My ficus plants aren't too picky. Pothos and philodendrons can tolerate lower light. If you're looking for a tall plant you could look into a Ficus Benjamina, some varieties of Dracaena or a Cast Iron Plant.

Just don't mistake low light for no light. Some entryways can be very dark. If that's the case, consider a grow light. 🩷
@SuperbRaspfern Thank you! I’ll try this and see. I need her in my entryway. That has a vent near it and the front door is 20 ft away. Not stable? Should I move it to my bedroom and then when healtgier, move her back? I specifically need an entryway plant of larger size.
@SuperbRaspfern the google failed me
Yes, back to the bedroom
Google just pulls together everything ever written. So never trust it!
