I ordered these hardy succulents with the idea of making ...

Hi Kelly! I love rock gardens - had one in my backyard and helped my mother in law to set up another one. Add more grit to the sand mix (I buy pavement sand and river stones at Lowes). Another point - choose a shady spot for semps. I know, all the internet people say you should give them sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon- but even the morning sun is scorching in North Carolina. I have a box of soft succulents in full sun for the whole day - and they are doing great even with all the rains we had. My semps , on the other hand burned and got rotten with even partial sun. I moved them to full shade, they look way better there. My mother-in-law (she’s in Cary) doesn’t have any rot issues because she added a lot of rocks and sand to the mix. But she had partial sun, and some of her chicks burned down as well.
I noticed that not all semp cultivars can survive our weather. Some of them are more resilient than the others. Varieties I had the most luck with: black, gold mine, chocolate kiss, Ruby heart, pacific shadows, and all the other that are larger in size.
Good luck with your project! Don’t forget to share some pictures:)
Mine are waiting in the pots until I find a better place for them
Those are the beauties from my MIL rock garden: golden nugget, steel appeal, chocolate kiss, and pink sapphire

Wow, the pics! That is sooooo cool!
Thank you for taking the time to explain.
I think I made a mistake. The area I thought I was going to do is full sun all day Dusk till Dawn😬
I was looking closer at your pics just now now that I have time. They are beautiful. I've never seen the ones you have. The golden nugget really stands out. That's really impressive!

I live in a condo so I don't have much area to work with.🫀
@EarthyRedclaws then you could arrange a rock garden with soft succulents! Just cover them in the winter when temperatures are freezing
@Artonina
Thank you for the response. I was so intent on doing something yesterday. I was looking at my cement planner and I did this πŸ˜ƒ

I hate to say I don't know what soft succulents are.😬
Semps will do great in a patio or balcony in our weather! I’m they will have some sun, some shade, just enough for them. I have some on the porch, they are growing way better then the ones in a sunny rock garden bed
@EarthyRedclaws sedums, echeverias, and other succs with fat chunky leaves. You have three of those, they are pale green, in the middle of the group
@EarthyRedclaws woooooooooow so gorgeous! Where did you get this new planter?
Here are my softies
Soft succulents turn gorgeous colours in our full sun
