Propagating the plant

#Dieffenbachia I repotted this in a bigger pot and separated one plant with roots and potted in the old pot. Few days later it was bend and mushy. I removed the mushy part and let it dry my question is can the branch be propagated in water? Can I just add root and small stem in soil and can it grow?

I just stick mine right in soil. This plant does great that way. Mine did ๐Ÿ˜Š
When you've had issues with rot already, I think water is a safer bet. Does the branch still have leaves? Make sure you cut just beneath a node and submerge it in water. Change the water out once a week. Wait until the roots are at least 3-4 inches long before moving back to soil. The reason the smaller plant rotted is probably because you put it back in the same pot. That pot might've been the right size for the full plant, but for a smaller plant it should've gone into a smaller pot. The general rule of thumb regarding pot size is that the pot shouldn't be more than 2-3" bigger than the plant's root ball. Also make sure to always let the soil almost completely dry out. Dieffenbachia don't like sitting in damp soil.
@stephonicle yes it was the same size pot but the soil was completely new for both pots. The smaller plant in water now has leaves. Hope it gets the new roots.
