Leaves keep falling off!!! How can I help

I've heard these are finicky little plants. You've got to get the water just right and the light just right. If it's too cold up there, that might be the reason for the leaves falling. However, I don't see why the leaves should come back in the warmer months. I have a little privet that loses a lot of its leaves in the winter, but they come right back in the spring. Just keep an eye on it that it's not drying out too much.
