They do NOT appreciate Water in abundance. If u water once down to the roots, put him in the windowsill with direct π sun and leave him alone. Dont even think about watering again for a month or until he is BONE DRY . You have to almost neglect them to get them to their Best . At least it will seem like it to you , but thats what they Thrive on.
@DaringColtsfoot what if i dont give sun?
@ZestfulHope51 You have a wonderful little cactus , but thereβs a little something that doesnβt belong there! And thatβs the plastic flower looking thing on top of your cactus. I really dislike what sellers do that in order to get people to buy cacti! They glue plastic flowers on top, because people think itβs pretty. You should very carefully try to remove the plastic flower, it serves absolutely no purpose. Your cactus will only bloom when itβs matured and that will take years. Anywhere between 14 - 20 years. And @DaringColtsfoot is absolutely correct in that they are dessert dwellers and need very little water. It looks like your cactus is still in the plastic growerβs pot. Plastic is impervious meaning that the water doesnβt dry out very well. Repotting the cactus into a terracotta pot is much better for the cactus since terracotta is a porous material, the soil can dry out quicker thus eliminating root rot and damaging your plant. Golden Barrel cacti (Echinocactus grusonii) are incredibly easy to care for, provided you mimic their native desert environment. Their care centers on two main rules: maximum sunlight and infrequent watering. Essential care guidelines include:Sunlight: They require the brightest, sunniest location possible. Indoors, a south-facing window is ideal. Outdoors, they thrive in full sun to partial shade. Soil: Use a gritty, extremely well-draining mixture, such as standard cactus soil combined with perlite, pumice, or decomposed granite. Watering: Water them deeply during the growing season (spring and summer), but ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings. During the winter, cut back on watering significantly or stop entirely, as they enter dormancy. Temperature & Hardiness: They prefer warmth but are cold-hardy down to about 13Β°F to 15Β°F. Important Note: Golden Barrels are highly susceptible to root rot if they sit in standing water or if they are exposed to wet and freezing conditions simultaneously. Always err on the side of underwatering. I know that this is a boat load of information, but itβll get you started.
What @Ms.Persnickety she said too ! Heart π
@DaringColtsfoot Nah, no worries if someone is just starting out I feel itβs my responsibility to point out whatβs, what!
With mine I water them from the bottom so that I know they got a good drink and the place in back in the sunny spot that it was in and forget about it! You will now when it needs water as it will look like@it is starting to shrivel up. Then I feed it from the bottom again and itβs back to its happy self. Always make sure it is bone dry before watering again because the worst thing you can do to these guys is give them too much water or have them sit in a pot that doesnβt have drainage holes! Good luck to you!
