Tiger Fern top roots?
When I got my tiger fern, it had these roots growing out the top. Picking it out of its pot, it had a lot of roots so I figured it needed a repot. I repotted it and it continued to put out roots through the top, I tuck the top roots into the dirt and it continues to produce more roots that come out the top π€¨ is this the plants attempt of shooting out rhizomes to start new baby plants or is this justβ¦ something they do and I could just trim them or continue tucking them in? π€ it otherwise has been growing healthy. π

I hope I donβt sound confusing right now. I apologize if I do.
When you repotted it was it root bound? Sometimes roots grow up even if they have room for them to grown down. But I would for now since itβs getting colder just keep covering them. In the spring when you go to repot just shake the soil out and try to remove what you can and repot in a pot 2-3 inches bigger. I personally donβt like cutting roots especially if theyβre healthy- and the roots shooting out are beautiful π€©

@Vjunc okay! Iβll continue the tuck π
I donβt think it was completely root bound. It was in a 4β nursery pot and I was watering it about ever 3 days to keep up with it so I think maybe it was getting close. Itβs hard to tell because itβs bottom roots were very fine and brown Incolor so it blended well with the dirt π but I didnβt disturb the roots, I just placed the whole old rootball/dirt into a new bigger pot. Now I water it every 5-6 days π€ just about lol it really likes water π₯²

@Kace I have a rabbits foot fern too, but those rhizomes are sooo thick compared to these π
thatβs why Iβm not sure π€ @PrimeChinarose I guess from your and Kace comments, I will tuck half and leave half to see what happens now (because theyβre kind of sturdy and I snapped 2 trying to tuck them back into the pot, oopsie π«’π
)
@Kace of course! π
I only just got mine about a month ago, but I can share my journey so far. I assume you know how sensitive they are since youβve had one π€§ I learned about that before I ordered one, anticipating a very sad upon arrival plant (I didnβt expect them to ship well, even if it started super healthy before) and I was right π
but that was my only option to get one, no nurseryβs near me had them. When it got here it was very saddddd π I chopped most of the plants damage but had to keep some so that it wasnβt just all gone π₯² I learned they like humidity and lots of air flow, so I decided to give it the best chance I could and have mine outside in shade, since I live in south Florida itβs still mostly warm and humid so I figure that will be best for it as opposed to inside. And itβs started to pump out some nice new leaves π€ so far so good, I put a pic of the new growth, the uncircled was how it mostly came. I unfortunately didnβt get a pic of it as it came out of the box because I was so sad π€£ even though I expected it. π€·π»ββοΈ Iβm just mainly nervous if I forget to water it or something because theyβre sensitive π₯Ή
@PlantingPeace I think I repotted too soon and didnβt provide enough humidity. Iβm starting to think ferns need more humidity than any marantaceae. Lol it looks great. South Florida is probably perfect for ferns. I wish I was into plants when I lived down there.
@Kace oh yea, it is optimal for them I think π
I literally saw a Boston fern growing inside a gutter in the middle of a drive way today walking in the parking lot of my grocery store. π€ To be fair, I guess thatβs one of the more resilient fern types.
But I get you on the plant keeping in south Florida. When I was younger I would hate how hot n humid it is here, and now I feel kind of lucky to live here because I donβt have to bring all my plants inside in the winter π
I am nervous to bring the cotton candy inside though, because of the drop in humidity and air flow, Iβm not confident it will thrive indoors, even down here. π₯² If I ever get to the point where i can separate to propegate, Iβll try and test around with one indoors. π

@PlantingPeace I agree with @Vjunc π―. Here is a link I found that shows you their roots that grow outside the fern.

@Kace oop π«’π€
I hope so too
I hope so too
@Kace oof, yea, perhaps to wait till spring may give you better chances of success to establish it. π
