Tiger Fern top roots?

When I got my tiger fern, it had these roots growing out the top. Picking it out of its pot, it had a lot of roots so I figured it needed a repot. I repotted it and it continued to put out roots through the top, I tuck the top roots into the dirt and it continues to produce more roots that come out the top 🀨 is this the plants attempt of shooting out rhizomes to start new baby plants or is this just… something they do and I could just trim them or continue tucking them in? πŸ€” it otherwise has been growing healthy. πŸ˜€

I hope I don’t sound confusing right now. I apologize if I do.

When you repotted it was it root bound? Sometimes roots grow up even if they have room for them to grown down. But I would for now since it’s getting colder just keep covering them. In the spring when you go to repot just shake the soil out and try to remove what you can and repot in a pot 2-3 inches bigger. I personally don’t like cutting roots especially if they’re healthy- and the roots shooting out are beautiful 🀩
@Vjunc okay! I’ll continue the tuck 😊
I don’t think it was completely root bound. It was in a 4” nursery pot and I was watering it about ever 3 days to keep up with it so I think maybe it was getting close. It’s hard to tell because it’s bottom roots were very fine and brown Incolor so it blended well with the dirt πŸ˜… but I didn’t disturb the roots, I just placed the whole old rootball/dirt into a new bigger pot. Now I water it every 5-6 days πŸ€” just about lol it really likes water πŸ₯²
I’m not familiar with tiger ferns, but my rabbits foot and blue star have these. They are rhizomes.
I have a Kangaroo paw fern that puts out those top roots like crazy and they have leaves growing out of those. It is very healthy and growing like you wouldn't believe. I repotted it in warm weather so it's not root bound. I think that's just what some ferns do.
@Kace I have a rabbits foot fern too, but those rhizomes are sooo thick compared to these πŸ˜… that’s why I’m not sure πŸ€” @PrimeChinarose I guess from your and Kace comments, I will tuck half and leave half to see what happens now (because they’re kind of sturdy and I snapped 2 trying to tuck them back into the pot, oopsie πŸ«’πŸ˜…)
I was just looking through your oasis and would love it if you can lmk how things go with your cotton candy fern. I want to try with that one again, but I’d need some pointers first!
@Kace of course! πŸ˜… I only just got mine about a month ago, but I can share my journey so far. I assume you know how sensitive they are since you’ve had one 🀧 I learned about that before I ordered one, anticipating a very sad upon arrival plant (I didn’t expect them to ship well, even if it started super healthy before) and I was right πŸ˜… but that was my only option to get one, no nursery’s near me had them. When it got here it was very saddddd 😭 I chopped most of the plants damage but had to keep some so that it wasn’t just all gone πŸ₯² I learned they like humidity and lots of air flow, so I decided to give it the best chance I could and have mine outside in shade, since I live in south Florida it’s still mostly warm and humid so I figure that will be best for it as opposed to inside. And it’s started to pump out some nice new leaves πŸ€— so far so good, I put a pic of the new growth, the uncircled was how it mostly came. I unfortunately didn’t get a pic of it as it came out of the box because I was so sad 🀣 even though I expected it. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ I’m just mainly nervous if I forget to water it or something because they’re sensitive πŸ₯Ή
@PlantingPeace I think I repotted too soon and didn’t provide enough humidity. I’m starting to think ferns need more humidity than any marantaceae. Lol it looks great. South Florida is probably perfect for ferns. I wish I was into plants when I lived down there.
@Kace oh yea, it is optimal for them I think πŸ˜… I literally saw a Boston fern growing inside a gutter in the middle of a drive way today walking in the parking lot of my grocery store. 🀭 To be fair, I guess that’s one of the more resilient fern types.

But I get you on the plant keeping in south Florida. When I was younger I would hate how hot n humid it is here, and now I feel kind of lucky to live here because I don’t have to bring all my plants inside in the winter πŸ˜…

I am nervous to bring the cotton candy inside though, because of the drop in humidity and air flow, I’m not confident it will thrive indoors, even down here. πŸ₯² If I ever get to the point where i can separate to propegate, I’ll try and test around with one indoors. πŸ™‚
You say resilient, I say that I’ve killed a few bostons. πŸ˜‚
I hope that it stays warm enough outside that you don’t have to worry about bringing her in.
@PlantingPeace I agree with @Vjunc πŸ’―. Here is a link I found that shows you their roots that grow outside the fern.

@Kace oop 🫒🀭

I hope so too
Now I want to get one. πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Winter I’m Pennsylvania is probably not the right time.
@Kace oof, yea, perhaps to wait till spring may give you better chances of success to establish it. πŸ˜
